If it's played in winter, the time difference will be +3 hours. They don't change the clocks, so Qatar is 2 hours ahead of the UK whilst we are on BST, but 3 hours ahead when we switch to GMT.

So if it's played in Winter, we 'll be suffering with catarrh while the team are suffering in Qatar.

Same you continue to play when the African cup of nations goes on, and the African players go and play in that tournament.

You could on the other hand, accept that a winter break is required and have a break.

This article states the world cup will be moved. Whilst this may count as 'speculation' in your eyes, its actually FIFA laying the ground work for moving the cup. Trust me if the world cup is held in Qatar, it wont be played in the summer.

Qatar won't hold the 2022 World Cup. Mark my words.

What makes you so sure?

The latest corruption allegations which will only grow in the coming months. Too hot to hold the tournament in the summer. If they switch it to winter then it invalidates their contract to do so, given that they bid for a summer tournament, and the countries that lost out to them in the bidding process can then take legal action. Not to mention the inevitable wall of opposition that FIFA will face from the top European leagues and clubs, should the season be disrupted in order to allow the World Cup to take place.

So many reasons.

We have played football in this country since the 1880's without the need for a winter break without any problems, why the sudden need for one now??

Also, there are a lot less African players that leave and go to play in that tournament, then there are, that go and play in a World Cup, so playing on at the same time is just not going to happen.

If they play a World Cup for the first time in winter, there's the need. It's not rocket surgery.

It should never have been given to Qatar, they don't even meet previous FIFA requirements of 12 stadia with only 1 city allowed to have 2, although I doubt it'll change as FIFA don't really care about the players - if they did, the matches in Brazil would have kicked off later to avoid the daytime heat there.

I take your points and all valid. However, I'm not sure FIFA has the appetite for the obvious legal and financial chaos that would ensue if it was taken away from Qatar. Stadiums are being built or existing stadiums being modified. Infrastructure, hotels etc etc all being built too. Some of the European leagues have a winter break anyway if it was to be held then. I just think FIFA will ride this one out and hold firm rather than backing down.

As an aside...the proposed stadiums are something else...

Its a bit of a catch 22 for them, have later kicks of mean that Europe, where the lion share of the TV audience is, will have games kicking of in the middle of the night and have a impact on viewing figures.

At least for the knock out round they should have abandoned the 17:00 (BST) kick off and just gone with 20:00 and 23:00. But again factor in ET and penalties it would probably be far too late for most people to watch the second game.

There might well be a need, it doesn't mean that it will happen, it would ruin multiple seasons, not just the one in which the World Cup might be being held, and I cannot see G14 or whatever they are called now, just sitting back and allowing that to happen.

Could've been 19.00 and 22.00 BST still sensible times in Brazil.

How would, multiple seasons, be (ruined)?

It can't be a summer Qatar WC if that Netherlands v Mexico game is anything to go by!
In Doha, I'd expect the additional heat to mean more cooling breaks leading to toilet breaks.

Great idea. That's normally the case with aircon stadia otherwise pointless.

My experience of Qatar and elsewhere in the area is that it is too cold indoors. They over do the aircon. I have to take a sweater for breakfast and switch the bedroom aircon off.

The players are supporters would rather be in aircon stadia in Qatar than in a frozen stadium in Newcastle or Sunderland.

A winter break is a great idea.

Dont forget, Qatar has invented open air - air conditioned stadiums, it was in their documents and plans that got them a summer world cup!

Oh but they dont exist, and never will.

You simply cannot air condition a vast open air stadium in a 50degree desert.

Thats the air temperature, the temp of things in the direct sunlight, say, like a goalkeeper, would be higher.

Well if England perform at that WC like they did at this, we might not need a break, they'll be back in a fortnight. Not sure how the other countries with PL players will perform though.
