Fantastic match. The Algerians deserve huge credit for an admirable performance.

That's 16 World Cup Quarter-Finals in a row for the Germans, now. Astonishing record.

Yeah, but they were lucky

Even when they were rubbish they reached the final

They are so solid as a football nation, them and Brazil, would make a fitting final, I guess.

I have a feeling Argentina might have something to say about that.

All credit to Algeria, that's how you go down fighting.
Definitely. Algeria just a shade shy of top level and miles clear of being the best African side. On the german side, Muller was the stand out. He was as good as Ozil was poor apart from his goal. Another epic match. They should just hold the WC in Brazil permanently!

Not happening this year. Same half of the draw. I think most will favour France based on today's matches. But actually I think overall the quality of Germany's competition has been better so the perceived form difference may be misleading.

I hope France will make note and take that German defence apart. If Algeria had the German's luck they would won.

Loew needs to stop his stupid vanity of playing centre-backs in the full-back position. Germany's defence was all over the show and didn't settle down until Lahm moved to right-back.
I thought that too. I gather he's played there before (I don't see many Bayern games) but when you look at their midfield with Khedira available to fill in then I wonder why he doesn't just play Lahm in a full-back position where they look weaker. I don't think I've ever seen Lahm have a bad game at either side full-back so that would fix a weakness and what would you lose really?

That's one minor complaint about the coverage of this world cup. They should be interviewing all the managers whenever possible and discussing all the little tactical details on their teams. I'd love to know the reasons for this switch almost as much as I'd love to know why LvG played Kuyt as a defender and whether that was a LvG invention or if he's been playing there regularly.

Germany botched plenty of great scoring opportunities of their own. I think both sides were a bit unlucky at critical points.

That was disappointing, he seemed like he was singing some kind of remix of the themes song and then went into something else

Why not just sing the bloody theme song?

I'm not keen on the song. My personal soundtrack has been Seu Jorge. Much better!

Unpopular Opinion: Ghana were more impressive against Germany than Algeria.

Ghana carried more of the run of play against Germany, generated more chances, and most will agree that Ghana had better finishing than Algeria.

Algeria were fantastic.

Germany are going to have to hope that Hummels recovers from flu in time for Friday; and Low needs to now play Lahm at RB. Boateng, Howedes and Metresacker have all looked shaky at times; with the latter two in particular. Schweinsteiger and Khedira need to start together, and Schurrle should also start ahead of Gotze - who, has been underwhelming in this WC. Germany-France, IMHO will probably be a close game - France need to start Greizmann, whose entrance changed the tempo completely versus Nigeria, and Oliver Giroud seems to find new ways not to score - France need to start Benzema upfront rather than on the left. I think that way, with some pace (which Germany's defense is quite vulnerable against) and France's talent midfield they'll be poised to give Germany a very hard indeed. That said, Germany can offer pace too, in the form of Schurrle, and although Muller had an off day today, he's generally a goal threat.

Neuer was the MOTM - fantastic goal-keeping, and may just well save Germany versus France. Should be a very interesting game - I suspect if the conditions are very heated and humid on Friday, the first half may have quite a slow and lethargic tempo - with the game becoming more open in the second half. I think both Holland and Germany went for a strategy of conversing energy earlier on in the game in light of the conditions, and perhaps hoping their oppositions would wear themselves out with a high tempo game.

Should be a very interesting set of quarter-finals!

A game of the sweeper-keepers in the quarters then. I wonder if the bookies do odds on anyone scoring a Beckhamesque halfway line chip? Football might see it's first ever 50/50 challenge on the centre-spot between two goalkeepers!

Ha! I thought it was a different song vaguely familiar.

I like the Pink Martini version

Thanks for introducing that song which was new to me and I listened to the end. But I far prefer "Brasil / Brazil"

I think France will hammer Germany in the next round if their defence continues to play like that, the goalkeeper saved Germany tonight
