I think that he will be involved but I have a feeling it will be Rego & Franksy doing the commentary!

I do hope they wont go overboard, as the guys will be nervous enough as it is!

Manys the time something has been promoted to death & its gone pear shaped as a result.

That Shrewsbury v Walsall match before Xmas was a good example.

Dont get me wrong, I want Walsall to do well, but no pressure.

I disagree they should play it up, it is probably one of the biggest games in Walsall's history!

First of all, welcome to the forum Mark. Unsurprisingly I'm with you on this one, I think BBC WM should make a really big effort with their Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final coverage.

I don't think going to town with their coverage will jinx it as it were and as much as I want us to win the final, I'm tempted to say that even if it did, it wouldn't be the end of the world. A major part of the reason why this is such a big deal is because Walsall are one of only four league clubs never to have played at Wembley, so this alone is worth talking up and I liked Mike Taylor's suggestion on the phone-in last night that between now and March 22nd they'll be plenty of opportunities for Saddlers fans to talk about their excitement about going to Wembley, personal histories supporting the club, pre-match superstitions and rituals etc.

Let's face it, it's relatively rare that WM are able to cover a showpiece final - in this region we've had Walsall, Birmingham and Wolves make Cardiff Play-Off Finals in successive seasons after the turn of the millennium, but since then we've only had West Brom's losing effort in the 2007 Championship Play-Off Final and Aston Villa and Birmingham City's League Cup Finals at the start of this decade. So I think they should capitalise on this opportunity and go all out, with things like pre-coverage shows from Wembley Way as they did before both of those League Cup Finals. It's worth pointing out that (one of) the last time(s) WM Sport won a Sony Award was for their coverage of the epic Walsall 3-2 Reading Division Two Play-Off Final in 2001, so from that point of view it's worth making an effort over.

Originally Posted by connor the judg:

I really hope that isn't the case - as WM's regular Saturday 3pm commentary team on mostly Premier League and Championship games, Paul Franks and to a lesser extent Mark Regan see very little of Walsall in league action over the course of the season and I feel it would be wrong to parachute them (certainly Franksy) in for the final; it would be much better to involve the WM commentators and reporters who watch them if not week in, week out, then at least a few times a month and so fairly regularly over the course of the season.

I know you keep a record of such things Connor so would be better positioned to comment, but haven't Rob Gurney and Mike Taylor been WM's commentary team for most of Walsall's JPT run? If so, then it would seem only right and proper that they'd be the commentary team for the final, perhaps with an ex-Saddler like David Kelly or Martin O'Connor involved in the punditry side, hopefully Mick Kearns too around his Saddlers Player co-commentary duties, with the likes of Richard Wilford, Tom Marlow, Steve Hermon and maybe even a return for Andrew Dawkins heard in a reporting capacity.

I've just checked the fixtures for the weekend of Sunday 22nd March and barring any late rescheduling there won't be a clash between Walsall's Trophy Final and WM's other four league clubs. It'll actually be a big weekend for WM with four/five commentaries, Wolves are hosting Derby on the Friday night, West Brom are at Manchester City in the early Saturday teatime PL game, then you have Aston Villa v Swansea and Cardiff v Birmingham on Saturday at 3pm. So there's no chance of any other game getting in the way of their JPT Final coverage.

A few points but I will start by answering your question (The Difference), and yes Rob Gurney and Mike Taylor have covered all the games in the JPT apart from 1 each! He would like to see Mike Taylor and Rob Gurney as the commentator/Presenter with an ex Walsall player on commentary. Richard Wilford might do a show on the morning from Wembley what with Richard having a show on a Sunday anyway. It would be nice to see WM cover this thought the whole day and I guessing that the final will be at 3pm so maybe they might stay on air until 7pm? As you say WM have a lot on over that weekend and with there being a full Championship list of fixtures on the Tuesday night of the week before the final and the Speedway starting that week I think what might see Richie Anderson or one of the other WM reporters. I will post the WM details so far this season later in the week.

On Free Radio 80s we could see them doing some coverage with maybe a 2:30pm - 5:30pm show with Tom Ross live from Wembley with a Walsall ex player and them may not be able to do commentary. It would be great to see Free Radio giving it some coverage but then again would there be any point because most people would listen to BBC WM because they would not know as much about Walsall as WM.

I think the WM schedule will come out about 2 weeks before so that's when we will know for sure.

Thanks for all the BBC WM details Connor. Having checked back over the thread, Rob and Mike were WM's duo for both legs of the Preston North End Area Final as well as Walsall's initial tie at Rochdale, with Richard Wilford being in the presenter/co-commentator's chair for both the Sheffield United game with Mike and the Tranmere Rovers comeback with Rob. So it would be nice if all three of them had some involvement from Wembley on the day of the final, I like your idea of Wilford presenting his usual Sunday show from Wembley Way.

It'll be interesting to see how/if Free Radio 80s cover the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final. It made sense for them to send Chris Coles to the Bescot last night what with The Goalzone being on-air anyway for their Birmingham City commentary, but they won't have any live sports coverage on the Sunday of the final with Tom Ross probably having worked both Friday and Saturday due to Wolves playing on the former night. I'm not convinced that they'll cover it, but would be happy to be proven wrong.

As for them using a former Walsall player, well, in their Birmingham City co-commentator Kevan Broadhurst they have a former Walsall manager, albeit he only had a brief spell in the job. Kevan got a bad rap among some fans for taking the Saddlers down in 2005/06 when he took over with a few months of the season to go, although I always thought this was very unfair as I don't think anyone could have turned around the total mess Paul Merson left in such a short space of time. I've always liked Kev as an analyst - he worked on the then-BRMB/Capital Gold Sportstime prior to his return to management - so think he would be the logical choice of co-commentators if FR80s are going to cover the final.

talkSPORT have announced the FA Cup Fourth Round Replays they'll be covering in midweek - it'll be the two TV games, Manchester United v Cambridge United on Tuesday and Bolton Wanderers v Liverpool on Wednesday. There's a midweek round of Premier League matches the week after and talkSPORT's Wednesday night commentary that week will be Chelsea v Everton.

Sam Matterface will be commentating on ITV4's coverage of Wednesday's first semi-final and Sunday's final of the Africa Cup of Nations, so he'll be absent from talkSPORT's commentaries on those days.

Next Sunday (8th February), talkSPORT have a double header of Burnley v West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United v Stoke City. The talkSPORT.com schedule lists Nigel Adderley and Michael Gray as the commentary team on the former, with Alvin Martin and Stan Collymore erroneously listed for the latter. I'm guessing Stan will be co-commentating from St James' Park as Call Collymore is to follow, but rather than Alvin it'll either be Jim Proudfoot or Andrew McKenna with him as lead commentator. Ian Danter will host Sunday Exclusive that day.

Great to hear that Clarke Carlisle has left hospital today. Mark Lawrenson will be sitting in for him and joining Jon Champion on Absolute Radio's commentary of Liverpool v West Ham United tomorrow.

Lawro usually supplies pre-match punditry on Today FM's Premier League coverage on Saturdays between 2-3pm, so it'll be interesting to find out if he's heard on the Irish station before beginning his co-commentary work on Absolute. Given the nature of the pre-match build-up on both stations, I think it would be possible for him to do both - in the past Lawro has appeared on Today FM from grounds he's been at for BBC One's Football Focus.
