Interesting to hear Jim Proudfoot appearing as one of talkSPORT's reporters this evening. JP was one of Sky Sports' commentators on Champions League games shown on their interactive red button service during the group stage last season, so it is notable that he is available to work for talkSPORT during the first night of play-off round action. I will be interested to hear if he is available to work for talkSPORT on Champions League nights during the group stage, when I expect the station will begin doing live commentaries from the competition.

I really don't get that. Why not provide commentary of the only big game tonight?

I personally think talkSPORT have made the right call and that an Around the Grounds show is a much better option than commentary on Besiktas v Arsenal would have been. There is a near full programme of Football League games tonight and they'll be a lot of people who are relying on a national radio service to provide them with updates from the three divisions. The Arsenal game is the first leg of a qualifier, there would have been a rights fee involved in acquiring the rights to it had they been interested in getting them and the match is available on free-to-air television. So I think talkSPORT have made a sensible decision here and are providing their usual strong service.

There you go then - even more reason for talkSPORT to have done an Around the Grounds show last night, providing a different, worthwhile service as an alternative to commentary on a game that was live on both free-to-air television and the other national radio station that covers midweek football. I note from 4-4-2's post that talkSPORT had more than twice as many reporters at Football League games than 5 Live did, so they will have been able to provide a more comprehensive service in terms of updates as well as regular scoreflashes.

I think you are a bit guilty of doing what you criticise other people for over on the Radio 5 Live Chit Chat thread here, Col, if I'm being honest - it does seem as if you are criticising talkSPORT's editorial call for criticisms sake. If Matchday Live on Saturdays now gets a bigger audience as an Around the Grounds programme than it did when they provided commentaries on 3pm games, then it would suggest they'd be similar demand for the same format on a busy night of midweek action, especially when the alternative is a one-off qualifying game that is receiving prominent free-to-air coverage elsewhere.

If you want to be critical, why are Radio 5 Live not providing commentary on the "biggest game tonight" in Maribor v Celtic instead of a routine Championship game? In fairness I suspect the reason for this is because of the costs involved in gaining individual rights to that game and sending a team to Slovenia, but even so it would have been nice if they'd have come to an arrangement to simulcast Radio Scotland's commentary on Radio 5 Live Sports Extra. It will also be interesting to see if 5 Live provide live progress reports on the Celtic game, which they haven't done for European ties involving Scottish clubs in the past despite Roddy Forsyth being there both for them and The Daily Telegraph. If Roddy isn't able to provide in-game reports, then doing off-tube updates would be better than nothing.

Sorry to pick holes in your latest post Connor, especially after you kindly offered to take over posting the Free Radio 80s details now I am no longer able to listen to their live coverage that often, but I have to correct you - Matt Murray joined Tom for the co-commentary at Craven Cottage last night rather than Andy Thompson (with the game going out on AM and DAB in Birmingham, the Black Country and Shropshire).

After reading Tom's tweet last night, I had wondered if Matt might be joining Tom and Andy either just during the build-up or as part of a three man team, but going by the podcast it sounds as if it was a tandem of Tom and Matt.
