Sorry, let me get this straight...

Brazil beat Chile on penalties, as did Costa Rica over Greece. Argentina, scored with three minutes of extra time remaining, Algeria took the Germans to extra time, and Belgium had perhaps the game of the tournament against the US.

But because the winners in the second round all happened to be the group winners in the end - no matter how close or entertaining the matches, FIFA should scrap the entire round of 16 so that an extra eight teams are sent home early, radically reducing the amount of football being played, the amount of revenue being made, and the potential for any shock results?

Is that the crux of the argument here?

Biggest overreaction in this World Cup forum to date.

Can't see this one being beaten yet.
Give it time.

"The World Cup final went to penalties which is like a lottery. Is it time to scrap the final and make the winners of each semi final, co-winners of the trophy?"

Two legged quarter finals would be ridiculous. It would drag out the quarter finals.

No different to dragging out the last 16 which as ive already proved is pointless

Maybe to spice it up bit teams who finish bottom of the group should be barred from the next world cup
Could make a right old mess of the qualification system!

On that basis the hosts shouldn't be in their own tournament in 2018..

Anyway I don't think its been pointless at all - its the first time all 8 winners have gone through and as stated before they hardly had it easy expect Colombia...

They should put all 32 teams through to the play off rounds.

That would keep english interest for amother game!
Just have a straight knock-out of all 32 teams (or 64 in future) and do a random draw for each round like the FA Cup. If that gives you Brazil v Argentina in the first found then so be it.

I wonder if a second placed team (in the group) has ever won the World Cup?
In the Euros, Denmark weren't even in the sodding competition to start with.....and they went on to win it!!
