Could this Christmas song now be banned due to a Rolf Harris reference.

In Mel Smith and Kim Wilde's version of Rocking Around the Christmas Tree, Mel says the line 'I haven't had this much fun since "Two little boys" was number one' while a picture of Harris is shown. The music channels continued to show it last year despite Harris awaiting trial but now he's been convicted does this mean no more plays for this innocent classic?

Or at least given their own forum. Lord knows there's enough threads to justify it.

I could live without hearing Two Little Boys again but will always stand by Rock and Roll Parts 1 and 2. Some works of art should endure no matter how depraved the artist who made them is.

Why would/should it?

If we started banning art because of the crimes of the artist, there would be very little art left.

I doubt they would ban it. What they might do is just blank the Rolf Harris reference out of the song. Of course the uncensored version would probably still be on Youtube.

There is one Christmas song that will deffinatly be banned. It's callerd Christmas In The Sun. It features Quo's Rick Parfitt and Rolf singing. It was awful anyway feel sorry for Rick though he co wrote that one with another guy and thought it would be good to get Rolf to sing it.

Perhaps another awful song that RF is associated with could be banned. Stairway to Heaven

Radio stations and music channels are so used to censoring and cutting out clips of most songs it seems that I'm sure they'll have no problems doing the same to the relevant second or two of Mel and Kim but play the song. It would be sad to lose it from the Christmas playlists.

No Stairway denied.

His version fine. Not the original it's one of the greatest songs ever written.

I like Led Zeppelin but that song is a real clunker IMO.

It's not my fave either but it is a classic. Kashmir is much better.

Just because a song mentions an artist, that doesn't mean it's art.

I say ban Christmas altogether to avoid any complications.

I would have banned it for having Status Quo on, long before the trouble with Rolf came out.

Just seen this on Danny Bakers Christmas hits on Pick TV and it was still included!

If it means that they play the vastly superior Brenda Lee original instead, then by all means ban the naff Mel and Kim version.

Yeah, I remember watching that at the beginning of December on Sky Arts. Danny had no problems playing it, but their version was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek when Mel is effectively messing about doing his Radio DJ quips and Kim making her feelings known about the lyrics, she said at one point in the song, "this is so corny".

I really love Brenda Lee's original though.

Why would they ban it? Two Little Boys is a lovely classic song and besides, Rolf Harris didnt originally record it anyway.
I dont think the reference was cut out of the Mel and Kim song when it played on VH1 this afternoon.
I think the Mel & Kim version is rather naff TBH

but jackson wasnt convicted, (whether he is guilty or not is a different argument) in the eyes of the law he wasnt proven to have committed any crime - rolf was (pity..)

i havnt heared mel n kims version for ages anyway, and as has been pointed out, brenda lees original is better anyway.
