Reflecting on The true Emmerdale. They don't make 'em like this anymore.
Looking back on Jack's funeral,
Now this is a tribute episode, The nonsense stuff with Betty on Corrie, the blink and you miss it over the top Allen on Emmerdale stuff.. It was clear they'd lost the vital ingredients of what an emotional.. Or just a genuine.. Tribute, reflection episode should be Take a look at the video: Www.youtube.com/watch?v=inELRdBqW3I I Started watching it and pretty much saw the whole funeral episode. There's something raw and honest about it In general I feel soaps are so scared to break the mould of a 'typical' episode these days that they don't try, Yes they include a few items of significance for big events e.g, the bikers at Allen's funeral, but the underlying emotion and time isn't given I'm not just on about tribute episodes or funerals. Soaps in general are lacking that genuineness. I can't ever imagine seeing an episode like the one on that clip again and that's sad Just having a look back but it's something pretty true in general. Especially regarding Corrie and Emmerdale |

Emmerdale has always been my favourite soap. I thought Alan's funeral had poignant moments in I.E: Steph at Alan's grave, the bikers, the singers.

I loved Steph getting on the table and going in the run But for some reason so much of what we see these days just feels 'done for the sake of making it poignant'. The quiet reflective moments aren't there, They were there on Seth's funeral. It's like it's just so watered down now |

Jack's funeral was a classic episode, mirroring the very first E/Farm in 1972. For me it was Annie Sugden appearance to, as soon as she SPOKE it was all the old memories of the old programme. It is a great shame they never asked her back sooner. Although retired from acting she has always said if there was a point of her character being in the village, then she'd do it, especially if it involved the Sugden Family. Unfortunately she is 95 now and the likely now is next to nil.
I miss old Emmerdale, even as late as the late 90's you still had characters that were in it pre- the plane crash. Yes actors leave, but some were pushed and it is a big mistake getting rid of the past because they could learn a lot from it. |

Why the heck would they possibly waste such potential ![]() Quote:

This!! I wonder if they will give Annie a funeral when Sheila passes. I really hope so.
Sorry to go on, but it's always been a bugbear of mine. 2009 never even mentioned him considering him and Annie were married. Bad continuity? I think so. |

I wished they had given Amos a send off. At the moment it is a case of 'what ever. happened to Amos...?' The character last appeared in 1995 and had been made reference too until 2000. In 2001 the old Robert went to Spain and came back as Karl Davies, he made reference that Annie was going doolally and Jack was worried about his Ma being alone. Then in 2002 when Zoe burnt down the church, Edna made reference that Amos and Annie and sent donations from Spain.

We haven’t officially established that Amos ever died. However, when we mention Annie in Spain, it’s usually implied that she lives alone. However, it’s not kept a secret for any reason as far as I can tell (he’s probably just been forgotten about because it’s only Annie that ever needs mentioning)! |

I do agree! Maybe the producers are scared of people turning off, no idea why they would though. Alan's funeral was really rushed and it should of been spread over an hour. Also they should of waited until January or February to kill him off. It was too soon to bury him a week after the siege.

Since Richard Thorp had died in real life it was a really sensitive issue. TPTB have must have had to discuss this with his family and that was what might have been agreed between them.
Family members are always consulted, as were Clive's. They have to be, there's always the possibility that an onscreen funeral would be too distressing for them. They'd have to know even if they didn't watch. |

Henry Wilks died of a heart attack in October 1991. He was helping out on the farm moving haystacks when it happened. Amos returned from Spain for his funeral.

Just happened upon a clip of Wilks' funeral actually. Sadly, the full episode isn't online but I think this appears to be another example of the "genuineness" the OP was talking about that is lacking from soaps these days. No over the top dialogue and the majority of the emotion coming from facial expression.

What a fantastic episode, I can't handle it. I loved Jack, one of the best soap characters ever. I think you're right OP however Jack was such a great character, richly associated with Emmerdale that I think a character like that demands an episode like this.
