Got to agree with Rio Ferdinand, United fans will be buzzing with Van Gaal, a quality manager who seems to get the big decisions right, so different to David Moyes.
fantastic shoot out. 9 great pens, and 2 super saves. Krul nearly saved more, and Navas got close as well.
Lineker on TV said it was strange, but Martin O'Neill did it at Leicester in a league cup final, although Steve Clarige then scored and pens weren't needed. Something like that. You would have thought he would have known.
Huge credit to Costa Rica, what a tournament they've had. Played Uruguay, Italy, England, Greece and Netherlands and didn't lose to any of them, only a shoot-out put paid to their heroics.

To be fair, this is the World Cup quarter final and although it happened once before, it's still strange!
I can't get the image of Gerrard holding his head in hands if we were in Hollands position tonight. At least we are now officially the worst ever pen takers!

That wasn't tonight though”
Like the old adage goes: you're as good as your opponent allows. It was clear from the first half that CR were aiming for a penalty shootout. They created next to no chances for themselves during the match and spent a lot of the time with ten players in front of their own goal, preventing the dutch from scoring.
American coaches would have done that without a thought, baseball especially. They take off baseball pitchers and hitters just like that. Everything is analysed.
They swap NFL players in and out as well, although it's rare to take off a QB though.
They're going a bit overboard on the impact of subbing Krul.
The main reason they went through were their 4 penalties were unsavable and four of the best shoot out penalties you will ever see. Kuyt and RVP's were perfect down to inches.
Costa Ricas were not so much, Ruiz was a straightforward enough save for any keeper.

Exactly. Five Live did a feature on penalty shoot-outs and looked at research recently done into the pscychology and statistics and what are the best methods of success. One thing they looked into was the unusually good record of some keepers in penalty shoout-outs and found that the keppers success had more to do with the beliefs of the penalty taker about the kicker than the ability of the keepre himself. Penalty takers confronted with a keeper they believed was good at saving penalties were more likely to take poor ones.
I wouldn't be surprised if Van Gaal was aware of this and whether Krul has a good or not record was less important than making the Costa Ricans THINK he had a good record. The last penalty was worse than the one the same player took against Greece.
Having said that Krul went the right way every time, so maybe there was more to it than that.

The Netherlands gave England, and every other team for that matter, a lesson in penalty taking.
Excellent ........ and Kuyt seemed fearless and he just nailed it.
so we all wouldn't mind that in the Prem then, penalty given, keeper walks right up to taker, gives him a load of verbal, pointing in his face etc... before he takes it, im looking forward to seeing it!

They were absolutely brilliantly : population of Ireland or Scotland and they went through the tournament unbeaten in open play
