What have their games got to do with football?

I don't think its so strange. The original goalie is better for the game, but Krul comes on as the shot stopper. I just don't see the problem

Don't know if anyone remembers, and slightly different thing, but going back a few years, when Ronaldinho chipped Seaman, just a minute or two before that, Seaman had strained his back in a fall. I always thought Ericsson should have got Seaman off.

How many subs do those sports allow?

It's not generally seen in football to sub a keeper unless they're injured or having a mare. Less frequent to see a tactical chance for a penalty shootout considering the keeper starting is usually deemed to be the best in the squad.

I wouldn't be surprised if they'd got a sub keeper that had done nothing put practice penalties. Maybe that was Krul and the switch was pre-planned.

Costa Ricas were not so much, Ruiz was a straightforward enough save for any keeper.”

It was the fact that if things went wrong (GK not making a single save) LVG would have looked ridiculously stupid.

Who else would risk their reputation like that?

Some people saying Krul should have been booked for his antics. What would happen if a keeper got sent off during a shootout?

Just the management thinking. The pitcher is central to the baseball, but as soon as they sense the pitcher is slightly off, the manager will take him off. I just see this in a similar light. You need to keep a sub back, but I bet a few more managers will think of doing this in future.

I think he's pointing out that every player has their strengths and weaknesses, football isn't excusive to that. It's just rare to see a manager in football make a big call like that, where as it's common in other sports.

Wanted Costa Rica as the underdogs but Holland will give the Argies a much better game. Argentina v Costa Rica would have been a re-run of tonight

According to Shearer and Hansen it's fine ........ you do whatever you have to, even if it's gamesmanship.

They must condone diving too then.

What is the game coming to? Exactly what I don't want to see, gamesmanship is similar to cheating and that surely is not what FIFA would call 'Fair Play'?

When the Dutch got their chances to score they couldn't do it!

Unheard of, but I presume they would be allowed replace the keeper with another player, otherwise the shoot out would be null and void, and under the rules it has to be used to decide the result

I'm sure Moyes is a great bloke, but he was always hugely overrated by the media - particularly the ex-players on Match Of The Day. If you actually look at his record for half-a-second he was always a bizarre choice for a major Euaropean club. Just look at the Grand Canyon between the record of Moyes and Van Gaal. Moyes benefitted hugely from the ex-pros network - similar to the way O'Neill was never criticised for spending shedloads of Villa's money on duds.

If nothing else there won't be a single United player who will get away with crossing Van Gaal the way they did Moyes. Again a bit like Ferguson in that sense.

Penalty takers confronted with a keeper they believed was good at saving penalties were more likely to take poor ones.

I wouldn't be surprised if Van Gaal was aware of this and whether Krul has a good or not record was less important than making the Costa Ricans THINK he had a good record. The last penalty was worse than the one the same player took against Greece.

Having said that Krul went the right way every time, so maybe there was more to it than that.”

I heard a bit of that (may have been on Talksport as well ? the guy was saying that they timed the time it took from the ref blowing for the kick to be taken to the taker taking the kick, the most successful teams tended to take longer, ie composing themselves after the whistle is blown.
i think he said that England have one of the quickest "reaction" times to the whistle blown, ie not composing themselves... very interesting stuff.

American sports do it because they have unlimited substitutions. You can't do the same in football.

Indeed. Bit of a difference between changing your keeper just before a shootout in a World Cup QF, and not subbing Van Persie against Newcastle because you're "worried how the crowd would react".
