This is the most pointless of all the pitch markings.

Why should it matter if the centre circle doesn't exist?

I reckon they should scrap the goal posts, nets and have jumpers for posts too

Pity you haven't started separate threads for each.

It would look odd without it. Must have been a reason to have it when they were designing the football pitch as we know it today. What's that semi circle on the edge of the penalty area all about too?!!

It's there so the players know where to stand during a minute silence

The arc by the penalty area is there for when a penalty is taken so the players don't encroach before the ball is kicked.

Same rule as penalty area arc for centre cirlce distance players must be for kick off.

Actually, they could get rid of it as it is only needed at kick offs.

All they need is the ref to draw a circle with his new free kick spray, though he might run out in high scoring games.

Could be fun though and allow the ref to express himself somewhat, maybe making a smiley or frowny face.

I must admit the idea of the ref using his spray to draw a knob or a pair of tits on the pitch was something that didn't occur to me.

With the spray, the centre circle is indeed obsolete.

If an overhyped overpaid overcooked pre-Madonna player dives and rolls around like they don't in better sports like field hockey and Kabaddi, the ref should use his spray to paint a line around him like police do for corpses. Then we can all laugh at football, like I assume tennis fans do. You don't get no mucking about in netball.

I think we should do away with goalkeepers. What's the point in them when you have players like Suárez?

It would get our American friends interested in the game when it becames high-scoring.

Surely, on this thread, that should be pre-Maradona!

In a penalty shoot-out, that's where the kick should be taken from, place the ball anywhere you like in the *D* and take it from there.

Often thought what about this for penalty shoot-outs? You get your five kicks, but you can choose (any of the five) from the 12 yard spot (and get one point) or from the *D* and get 2. Who'd be brave enough to start going for the "2"?? Miss and the oppo are bound to take the "1", score and you are virtually certain to force the oppo to do the same with their next kick.

Was it the MLS who did the penalty from the centre circle. The player could dribble the ball upto the box and choose when to shoot, or even take it round the keeper.

Yeah, that was their shoot-out before they quickly and sensibly accepted draws are a thing, ripped from ice hockey.

There's no reason to mess around with penalties at all, especially adding game show nonsense. Should they ask the studio audience if they should gamble or take the speedboat first?

Sounds like something from Paul Trevillion's You Are The Ref series: Whilst refereeing a World Cup quarter final you drop your can of magic white spray. A player picks it up and draws a giant cock on the pitch. What action would you take ?

Just think how much white paint has been used around the world painting that circle around the centre spot. We probably wouldn't have global warming at all if we hadn't wasted all that energy in paint production. Sepp Blatter has a lot to answer for.

The spray isn't new. As has been pointed out elsewhere it's been used in South America for years. I hope it's not being used in the World Cup only because it's being held in South America and that we'll see the spray being introduced here, although I haven't heard anything confirmng that.
