So JP gets to tell Ste he was raped. Are they just gonna give Saint JP all Brendan's storylines and be done with it? And I don't want to be mean, but Hollyoaks will only change forever when it stops churning out a river of amateurish infantile shite.

Couldn't agree more, C&S.
They always say that storylines will change the show for ever, and then everything ends up being swept under the rug. The only way things will change is if BK leaves. Poor Kieron. He deserves better. |

How about they interview Kieron when he's actually got his own storylines?
![]() It's a sad day indeed when JP has his pick and Ste's been reduced to this. I'll never forgive this show. |

Well considering all of Brendan's storylines were "amateurish infantile shite" probably.

![]() They went above and beyond by soap standards for Brendan's character though, everyone has to admit, whether you hated him or not. They put real thought and planning and writing into his final arcs and he got special weeks and episodes and Later, etc. It's just that it all went into making us sympathize with him and basically glorifying and then excusing him of being a bastard, instead of handling the domestic abuse well and equally considering Ste's character, which has soured it all for some fans. The current rape storyline has been farcical though, from concept to execution, something that can be said about the show as a whole with all its plot-driven storylines and shifting characterizations. And to make matters worse, Ste's playing second fiddle again to another character with the same kind of storyline that he was involved with a year ago. Bryan's not only guilty of copying EE, he's guilty of hacking Hollyoaks of itself. I think soap can be as elevated as the people behind it are willing to make it, but they must just be some tired b*tches over there at Lime. Because this show has gotten very lazy. |

Damn I used to love this show.
Now it seems like it's in a competition with itself to be (to use BK's words) even more "outrageous". It's all hype. How can the show possibly ever change forever when characters don't react to death or cheating or explosions longer than around two episodes before the next shitstorm rips through their lives? Characters have changed, sure. I mean, Darren and Nancy as individuals and as a couple have been ruined beyond all recognition but that's not something to be proud of. Unless they're going to wipe out the whole village in an act of terrorism (or someone decent is employed to run/storyline the show) then how can it possibly change? Or are they finally going to give the characters some depth and stop writing them to fit the plot? Is that the big change? |

I don't see a future for Ste and JP as a couple. They are chalk and cheese. But with their history and set of individual problems I think a dynamic as friends could be good. Kieron says Ste will be shocked by the rape. And rightly so but I wonder if part of a scripted shock will be the notion for Ste that romance is off the cards now?
It's clear that some posters here can't bear the thought of Ste and JP in any combo. Fair enough as a sudden camaraderie is a little unrealistic given their past but for me that only makes it a bit more interesting. The rape plot needs resolution. If Ste is the one to help JP out then so be it. The writers are doing it anyway so why don't we just watch it and see. If there is a romance at the end I'm sure it will be short lived. No one remains happy in HO for long! |

It really does make me sad to see a show I used to love and invest in reduced to what it is now. It's so baffling to me because BK's first stint was just so good. I know times change and for some reason there's this notion of young people needing constant excitement on their television to keep them interested but I'm not convinced that's really the case. Surely it would be better to hold onto the long-term viewers who are loyal and dedicated to the show? Those are the people voting in their hundreds for them at the BSAs, not the new audience who don't care whether their favourite characters differ from one week to the next.
In regards to Ste, I just find it unbearable really. Kieron's such a talented actor and they know he's a fan favourite, and yet they don't give him his own storylines and if they do they make it about his love life. He had such an opportunity to shine after Brendan went to prison, they could have explored so much about him dealing with that loss on top of everything else and yet they gave him a week long story of his mum dying which then became about Doug and a drugs storyline which will most likely become about JP. I shouldn't be surprised really when most of the characters seem to be in the same boat but it just seems an awful shame after the thought and care they used to put into storylines, not just Ste's. |

They were the last strong couple that the show had. They were already damaged from the Sienna storyline, but they could have been saved. Instead we get this ridiculous Robbie/Nancy flirtation (does anyone actually believe that Nancy would choose an immature school boy who got her best friend sent to jail over the gorgeous, supposed love of her life?) And now the cheating twist which makes little sense. I remember a few years ago when it looked like Cindy and Darren might have an affair, but the show resisted going there. They knew not to mess with a couple that people were invested in. Now they just don't care. |

True. But so's a punch in the face.
Brendan was an incredibly strong character, but yeah, not for everyone. Anyway, he's gone and ain't coming back, so not much point chewing it over now! |
