Sonia claims £20 can feed a family FOR A WEEK! (in London, as well) and then, in the same episode, Roxy goes and spends a fiver on a vodka tonic. How the hell did these writers work that out?

A fiver on a vodka tonic I can believe. It's not a drink I often buy but I know you're lucky to get change from a fiver for even a small glass of wine in most London pubs or bars these days and doubt spirits are much cheaper.

Feeding a family for a week on 20 quid is harder to work out. I imagine she's working on the principle of a couple of good cuts of meat and a lot of fruit and veg ut how big a family?

And at the other end of the scale, Phil can magic hundreds of thousands of pounds out of thin air should the plot require it, despite losing everything numerous times.

Exactly.

It's totally pathetic.

TPTB are just clueless.

Speaking of, how many times has Dot claimed to 'have a bit saved up', even though she was in debt a couple of months ago?

Hehe, I thought the vodka would probably be that dear in London, it was just a funny contrast with Nurse Sonia's expect health and well-being on a budget advice I doubt £20 would get Carol's massive family very far for food.

It was a double vodka tonic.

Everyone has a secret - Sonia's must be that she's been shoplifting!

It was actually water. Tracey is trying to make money by passing water off as vodka. Roxy is too dumb to notice.

Of course she could budget food on £20. All they eat is chicken nuggets.

You could survive on £20 if you HAD to. Most of it would be from tins.

And the previous episode Carol was selling hers and the kids stuff to pay off the loan sharks and was still short, and yesterday Bianca just gives Whitney £20 to go to McClunkeys.
How about you save that £20 and cook something for gods sake!!

Pasta and rice aren't that dear. You can get a fair bit of decent food in £1 shops now too. Ok maybe £20 wouldn't feed them all for a week but it would for a few days at least.

Max Branning is another one who is either broke or wealthy at the whim of the writers.

Possibly the worst example of "Monopoly money" finance, however, was how Roxie somehow lost Archie Mitchell's millions because the writers wanted her skint again. When (not if) Janine Butcher loses everything, I hope there's some sort of plausible explanation.

Roxy was truly bizarre. All that fuss about Janine kicking her out of the poky flat, she could easily have retreated to her Weymouth mansion and cried into her Maserati about evil Janine.

People's financial situations do bother me on this show. I think Sonia was more making a point at how wasteful Bianca is with money. It's probably why she's never got any. She boasted about pocketing 35 quid from the stall the other day, but she can clearly cane over half of that on fried chicken. To be honest, Bianca could probably feed the house suppers for five days on 20 - all they eat is chicken nuggets and chips and I think spag bol has been dropped from the rotation now David's gone. There'll also be more food per serving to go around now David's gone. Greed, Greedy Wicksy.

Chicken nuggets every day!!! I'd be happy to show Bianca how to cook a nice lamb casserole with red wine sauce. Some lightly sauteed mushrooms and a few shallots with finely sliced potatoes. Similarly, I'd be willing to share the secret of my beef wellington with her for the sake of the kids and their diet. My Lancashire hot-pot recipe goes to the grave with me though, I'm afraid. The ball's in your court, Bianca.

BIB it annoys me a lot. Why can't they employ just one person to keep an eye on the money. It doesn't have to be an accountant, just someone who's good with figures. I've got a thing about numbers, I can't help it, I count everything all the time. When I get to the till in the supermarket I know exactly what the total will be. It's so frustrating when they ruin perfectly good episodes because they can't be bothered to be even vaguely accurate about money.

you can feed a family on £20 per week. But it's not healthy and is as dull as ditchwater.

I know because I do it.

If you can manage to save £1 a week for a month you can buy a 'big' value rice, and a big value pasta. Then frozen veg mixed veg from iceland (and frozen mince). Some jars of value sauce, some eggs, some chips and baked beans.

Of course you have, cottage pie every monday, egg and chips every tuesday, toad in the hole every wednesday, pasta bog (pasta cheaper than spaghetti) every thursday, a veg curry on fridays, boiled egg and soldiers on saturday, and a roast on sunday followed by a shared tin of value rice pudding as a treat..

Every lunch is a value ham sandwich on unbuttered value bread with whatever sauce was on special offer or cheapest that week. followed by a value yogurt and a packed of value crisps. Breakfast is value cornflakes or if you have saved up value krispies.

As a snack, value rich tea biscuits (one per person per day should last one pack for a week).

you can get a decent amount of food for £20 - most of the supermarkets do a basic range, cheap - if you go in at the end of the day, decent price reductions on dairy and fresh meat/veg

Im not sure that it would feed a family as large as Biancas for a week but it would probably feed them for 3 or 4 days

But that would involve Bianca having to leave the square for an hour or so to go to a supermarket. She would rather spend every minute of every day in the square within 20 metres of her front door.

lol, very true - it would involve shopping at large supermarket rather than the ridiculously expensive corner shop
