What Would You Improve: Eighth Doctor Era

Now for the next topic, all rules still apply. What about the Eighth Doctor's Era, from the TV Movie, to "The Night of the Doctor" would you improve?

Honestly, I don't have much to say here; I really had no problem with the movie, aside from maybe toning down the Master a bit, and I find Eight's Big Finish stories perfect for the most part.

It's been a while since I saw the TV movie but my memory is that making the ending less stupid/magical and more logical/scientific would be good. Otherwise More would improve it.

I would add about five seasons onto this Doctor's run.

Yes make some episodes. A TV movie and a minisode are just not enough.

More TV episodes really.

Make a full series.
Keep Grace as companion.

For the TV Movie, I often wonder if the wrong choice of villain was perhaps a reason for the fact no Series followed it up. Eric Roberts did a half decent job as The Master but he was there to be criticised and maybe if we'd had the Daleks instead it may have been different. Unless they came in the Multi-Coloured variety they were unlikely to receive much criticism for their performance!

Aside from that I haven't too much fault with the TV Movie aside the fact Grace didn't go with him at the end. Maybe that too may have had a small impact on decisions made, who knows.

And yes, more TV Episodes would have been ideal. Listening to McGann on audio, he certainly had a lot to offer as The Doctor onscreen.

I haven't listened to too many of those audios as yet but as mentioned in the Big Finish Thread, not a great fan of the Charley character so would make her nicer and less official.

As for Night Of The Doctor, just perfect so nothing to change of that.

Televise his audio adventures at the very least. But I would love to see original filmed adventures with the 8th.

Set it in England, or on another world. Americanised Doctor Who, my foot!

As most people have already said, more stories/episodes. It's very difficult to pass judgement on just 1 story/90 minutes.

Cannot really comment on this one! Loved its return to TV! Bit of an 'iffy' story though - and why were those invisible Daleks screaming 'Exterminate' in weird high-pitched pinky & perky voices?? The Tardis was a Monstrosity of a fricking Cathedral, complete with bats! And the Master was a right camp geezer in the end!!. Pathetic limp ending to re-living Grace and Chang-Lee too! And as for the 'Half-Human' bit - we all know where that went!!

Apart from that - errrm it was OK! It was nice to see Doctor Who back on telly!!

I don't do Big Finish things or novels....so cannot comment any further!

Paul McGann was great though!!

I guess the half-human thing since no one seems to be running with it, and I've yet to hear a good explanation to it.

While I would like a TV run with Paul McGann, I still like his audios, comics and books. I wouldn't mind some clarification on what order it all happens in.

Actually, a while back they said there was a Doctor who movie in production that was going to be non-canon.

But that would miss a great opportunity to cover the beginning of the time war. Not, that we absolutely need to cover the time war, but it would be a great setting to tell stories in, showing the decent of the Doctor that would eventually lead him to regenerating into the Renegade.

This.

We need to see more 8th Doctor stories, preferably on TV but if the BBC are unwilling to run to that or think it would steal Capaldi's thunder, then more red-button minisodes - perhaps a series of them.

The 1996 film was supposedly aimed at new viewers (especially in the US) as much as old fans but was weighed down by loads of Who-continuity with a lot of knowledge taken for granted.

Just in the opening few minutes, new viewers were supposed to connect the image of the 7th Doctor sat in his sprawling control room reading a book with the image of a Police Box flying through the time vortex. Why would anyone who'd never seen the show before have any idea those two images were connected?

And I think having Sylvester McCoy in it was a terrible mistake. Again, trying to introduce the show to a new audience with a regeneration story was an error of judgement. The film should have started with Paul McGann already playing the Doctor.

In fact, as a whole, there was too much Who-history in this film (The Master, Daleks at the beginning, regeneration, the Eye of Harmony etc). It needed to be fresh and new but, instead, was complicated and confusing.

If I am really honest, the 1996 movie needed to be 'Rose' - you start with the companion, not the Doctor, and find out everything you need to know through (in this case) Grace.

It also showed cat-like glowing eyes to symbolise the Master-which was surely a legacy from Survivor, the last full McCoy story, when the Master took on some of the aspects and powers of the cat beings, but stopped himself becoming completely like them.
