I agree with you although I would still make Germany favourites with Lahm returned to defence. Without him there they had a problem with pace.

I think Germany will have a much better chance against Argentina. Holland have the tools to beat them. Germany lack pace on Robben's side of the defence and he could cause them even more problems than he has some other sides. They're also more solid and organised and harder to score against than a lot of teams here. They'll be better equipped to stop Germany playing through them. Then of course there's the fact that the game would be as big a derby as Brazil v Argentina,

I hope Holland do it. They deserve a World Cup because of what Dutch football has given the game over the years. Not just great players and beautiful football but game-changing tactical innovation. Only Brazil have done more in that regard. It's amazing given their tiny population - only Uruguay have done anything similar.

They've also had cruel luck. Twice having to play the hosts in a final and in one of those having their best player - one of the top five players in history - unable to play because of kidnapping threats. I won't mind too much if Germany win and play like that though

Does this mean Algeria and Ghana are miles better than Brazil?

I understand why "Wrong Said Fred" was getting the bird but can anyone tell me why Oscar was getting booed as well? I thought that was a bit harsh.

Which set of fans next season is going to be the first to chant 'it's just like watching Brazil' at an opposition getting hammered?

In a way this might help Brazil in the future. They can console themselves with the knowledge that they will still be the only nation with 5 whole stars on their badge after this tournament is over, but it isn't ever good to sit on your laurels. You've got to experience the lows to make the highs taste sweeter. Maybe this experience will motivate them for the future.

It's like that line from a movie "Without the bitter baby, the sweet ain't as sweet".

A stat I quoted after the Chile match held up well : no team that has had to win a penalty shoot out at the last 16 stage has ever reached a World Cup final.

Stands to reason.....if you have to win a shoot out that early, it suggests you're already struggling in the tournament.

I could see Brazil going 2-0 down here within the first half hour, they really have no idea how to defend at all.”

You were right in your analysis but did you see them going 5-0 down within the first half hour?

But everything German did worked, while Brazil had a number of near misses that could have gone in. Then for a brief period Brazil couldn't do anything right, and let in the goals.

Just so very similar to the Germany Portugal game when Ronaldo just couldn't get a break.

BIB - yes, but Portugal were with 10 men and absolutely terrible and even they managed not to get hammered 7:1

I'm surprised that Muller stayed on for the entire match. Are they playing for the golden boot or the cup?

The same German team playing the same high quality of football would only have beaten Costa Rica 3-0. Brazil's defence was non-existent.

Good point. I have a very strong feeling Germany will lose the final.

BBC2 are running the match at 1.20 am; I'm going to record it, I doubt I will ever see the like again.

I'm a supporter of Germany but I feel people are going to go over the top about this and Germany will probably now lose the final.

Remember Spain lost 1-5 to Holland, ya know, self described by Alan Shearer and the vast majority on here the greatest team ever in the history of football

So Holland beat the greatest team ever 5-1, the team thats won the past three tournaments, and people were installing them as immediate favourites, yet they jammed past Mexico with a dodgy penalty, and couldn't break down Costa Rica in 120 minutes.

But wait, they're historic, they beat the greatest side the world has ever seen 5-1?

Germany winning 7-1 doesn't mean they're a great side, just as England beating Germany 5-1 in 2001 didn't make them a great side.”

I agree that it was one of those freakish games that happen from time to time; a bit like our 5-1 win in Germany that ultimately meant nothing.

Germany were superb and Brazil were awful. The end result was a good hiding, the like of which has never been seen before.

I'm not sure about the comparison with Spain. They looked a shadow of the team that won the last three tournaments. They were a great team, but all things come to an end and the end of that Spanish team came in the group stage of this World Cup. In many ways that was almost as historic as Germany's win tonight.

There are two games left in this tournament and I wouldn't like to predict either of them to be honest. Argentina v Holland really could go either way and so could the final, regardless of who faces Germany. We didn't necessarily witness the dawn of a new era tonight. Germany have always been a top quality team and regularly perform well in the World Cup. The manner of their victory was shocking, but the fact that they beat Brazil wasn't. They are a better team than this Brazil side by quite some distance.

I'm hoping for a Germany v Holland final. I would be happy for either of those teams to win the World Cup. Holland deserve their first win. They have been good to watch, but after tonight, it would be very fitting for the team who made history against Brazil to be crowned champions. Argentina, on the other hand, have contributed very little to this tournament and really don't deserve it.

Annoyed with Ozil. Should have been 8-0, not 7-1. He has been the worst German player in that team

Of course. What do you expect from a Premier League player...

Just watched the minutes after the game again, as an atheist I do wonder why the Brazilian players are still praying to their god, doesn't the result prove (in the very least) that he's not on their side, but even more likely, that he doesn't exist, why should an omnipresent being give a toss what's happening in a football match when he can't be arsed to cure kids with AIDS.

Now I hope the Dutch (despite Robben) win later today and on Sunday.

I have never agreed with fans booing a team but for the first time ever I can honestly say both manager and players deserved it. Those guys are first team players in some of the top teams in Europe - they should have still been able to give Germany a good game as lesser teams already have. After 10 mins in a semi final on their home ground they gave up. I had a lot of sympathy for the fans who have probably saved money for years to go to these matches. Shocking display and I certainly don't have sympathy for players.

From what I have seen of him this season and in this world cup, Ozil goes missing too frequently, is pushed into the periphery too easily and lacks physical presence on the ball. Needs to strengthen his head and his body, he has the skills for sure.
