You don't need the home button to turn off the phone? Press and hold the sleep/wake button until the power off animation appears and that's it. Sounds like you mean the sleep/wake button is broken?
EDIT looks like I read it wrong. If the power button is broken then enable Assistive Touch: Tap SETTINGS, General, Accessibility, AssistiveTouch (near the bottom) and tap AssistiveTouch to ON. You will now notice a small dark square with a circle in the middle (you can move this square anywhere). Tap the dark circle to open the assistiveTouch menu, then tap Device and tap and HOLD the Lock Screen icon. This will bring up the iPhone's Power-Off slider - no need for a power button any longer |

![]() I've edited my above post hopefully that sorts you out. To get the phone back on when it's off just plug the phone in and it will turn on |

Ahh I see, in that case you may just have to wait for the phone to run out of power(I take it this update screen is on permenantly without the screen dimming?) if so it'll run out of juice and switch off, then plug it back in, after a few mins it will come back on, at what stage I don't know probably the "plug into iTunes" screen I'd imagine.

i will try that , i am beyond frustrated as they force me to update
I've seen many iPhones still on versions of iOS 5 and 6 without any problems in their use. |

How did they force you to update?
I've seen many iPhones still on versions of iOS 5 and 6 without any problems in their use. Everytime I went onto iTunes to synce it kept coming up with there is a new update , it also flashed up on my phone and then I had a red reminded on general settings which was annoying . And so I update and then I google and it's a common problem that the update is crashing half way though . |

So they didn't actually force you to update?
No idea why they have a release for a update when it crashes half way though and it's a well known fault . Apple sometimes are chumps with the way they deal with stuff like this . |

You could have turned off the settings notification "1" badge that appears on the icon, but too late now.
Hopefully the battery wasn't at 100% before you tried updating, otherwise you could be waiting until this evening before it dies. Let us know what happens when it dies and you plug it in, should be the "plug into iTunes" screen as I said above. Then plug into the PC and open iTunes and attempt the update again. |

As above might be worth getting that button fixed if you plan on keeping the phone much longer. |

Glad it's sorted. Maybe time to get the on/off switch sorted now
