It's not so brave if you could sing it without any trouble, say, 1 or 2 hours earlier. Or if, while singing on the show, everything had gone well up to the "something extra" point. Especially since she had a sympathy reason for any problems.
Indeed, she's just as breave even if it doesn't work, right? If not more. She really can't lose with this risk.
She deserves credit for not chickening out, but even a cynical calculation would say "take the risk" in her case.
I also have a feeling that Edith doesn't expect or want to win too much and so doesn't feel she has much to lose. Maybe I'm just being taken in by a nice persona, and she's really cynical, smug, and ambitious; but I hope not.
Also her confidence isn't being undermined. On the contrary, the judges praise her, and she presumably knows by now that she's popular with viewers. (I'm pretty sure Colin told her something to that effect the other day.)
Whereas someone like Kim may feel that the only way she can even stay in (let alone win) is to sing well, for otherwise, against the other good singers and the entertainers, she'll be gone.
My hope is that the good singers have it in them to do something special, and that someone in there (Carrie? David?) is encouraging them to play for higher stakes.
Richard often has good points, but he puts them in such a negative way that they have the opposite effect from what he wants, or at least should want.

And I don't think the students understand what he wants. They don't know what kind reaction they'll get when they sing, which is one of the most effective ways to destroy confidence that there is.
The supposedly "too nice" Lesley, on the other hand, gets it right.
