When quoting those sort of stats though you need to remember that in many cases the host nation would not be expected to have a reasonable chance of winning the World Cup. Mexico, USA, Japan, South Africa etc.

A more telling stat IMO is the one which says that a European team has never won a World Cup held in the Americas and only once has a South American team won a World Cup held in Europe.

Being the host doesn't guarantee success but being from the right continent seems to be important.
I don't disagree with you. The stats, by the way, aren't quoted, just something I put together out of interest. I have supported a European team winning this world cup precisely to break the monopoly of S American sides in their continent.

This world cup, was a little too obvious - Brazil v Argentina final

Now, Mark Lawrenson has predicted a Brazil v Argentina final

I just hope that Germany / Netherlands don't play like frightened rabbits, someone needs to throw a spanner in the works

Far too scripted

The semis look wide open but I've a funny feeling we'll see a Europe vs South America final : Germany vs Argentina might be the more likely but even Brazil vs Netherlands wouldn't be a surprise.

Something tells me that is going to be the final as well.

I certainly hope not. The thought of this shitty Brazil team winning the World Cup fills me with horror!

I agree but all four of them are unspectacular.

Unless someone puts together a couple of decent games mediocrity will reign.

After the group games this world cup has lost its fizz.

Hoping for three cracking games to adjust the balance.

Although effective and the outstanding team I never enjoyed watching Spain play in South Africa, I like my football a little more direct, but they deserved to win. Four years later and I don't think any of the four left have shown anything to be truly crowned world champions.
