Julie Gardener

Don't worry she's not dead I was just looking back on some of the threads form 2010 and realised there was a lot of Goodbye Ten and Goodbye RTD threads but none for Julie Gardener. So decided to Create this thread for Julie to say thanks. Russell often admitted that she fought to get Doctor Who the promotion and budget it deserved and that she always fought the shows corner. She was also the voice of reason and seemed to ground Russell on some of his ''mad'' ideas.

I would guess because she wasn't important creatively.

A shame not to be recognised in the same way though. Without talented hard working people who enable so-called "creatives" to find their audience, nothing would make it to our screens. There are many aspects to creativity that aren't properly recognised by the public or the fans.

Let's face it, a complicated TV show like Doctor Who is team effort which would not exist but for the efforts of all involved. Only the actors and sometimes the writers and directors get their due recognition generally.

That's a joke, right? Julie was absolutely FUNDAMENTAL is defining the shape and vision of the show. She's probably of equal status to Russell T Davies himself in that respect but because she wasn't as "front of house" she doesn't get the kudos. But she's just been given an OBE for her services to the TV industry in Wales so someone's noticed her.

Spot on. She played a massive part in the production of the show which should never be taken for granted.

Erm no she wasn't. Yes was a brilliant producer and had the kind of strength and tenacity needed to get the show on screen...the kind of strong hand we could've done with in recent years you could say...but the creative vision was all RTD and his writing team. There is zero evidence she had any input in that respect. Not to denigrate her work. Its vital in getting that vision to the screen but to compare her to RTD is simply bizarre. Her role was entirely different and not as important. DW would've and could've returned without her. It wouldn't have without RTD.

I think you're absolutely right. I do think Julie was particularly talented in her field and did help RTD keep production on course. It has been suggested by quite a number of people that the production problems Doctor Who has suffered since 2011 were down to Julie leaving.

Hope my post didn't sound negative. Wasn't meant to be. Just trying to draw a distinction between what she did and RTD did. I think when it comes to the creative side it was all RTDs genius. But as we have seen with Moffat...and yes while some disagree I consider him a genius...such minds need a strong and pragmatic voice to guide them and curb their inevitable indulgences. And its a shame Moffat doesn't seem to have had that. JG fought for the show and clearly helped smooth out alot of the problems such a production encounters. I sometimes wish Moffat had such a voice guiding him. Doesn't seem to have been the case. And I say that as someone who prefers the Moffat era. But someone like JG has been sorely missed I feel. I just don't think we should credit her with things she didn't do. For me the creative side of DW when it returned was pure Russell. But Julie was a vital part of the 'machine'.

I like to think if she had been around in 2011/12 she would've told Moffat to chuck the Wedding of River Song in the bin and start again. That said she presided over the Adipose era so maybe not.

Anyway. A brilliant producer.
