I can't remember a time when Germany didn't have a great goal keeper. Yet they haven't won the title in 24 years.

They'll make up for that on Sunday

In 1970, the Brazil team, classed as the best, had a very average keeper in Felix. So this is all a lot of tosh....

It did help when the 10 in front of him were as good as that lot though.

The 1994 Brazil team didn't have a good goalkeeper, as Taferal was average at best I would say.

Yes. World cup winners outfield players are so good, they generally do not need a top goalie.

We started off saying winners need a good goalie, but in fact they dont really

No-one in brazil grows up wanting to be a goalie. In the past brazil have been so good attacking the quality of the goalie didnt matter.

Well hasn't Manuel Neuer put that idiotic thinking to rest. The man is amazing.

If you win the World Cup generally it's because your team are pretty good and hence your keeper will be pretty good.

Yep, I'm sure we'd all agree that Nery Pumpido was the main reason that Argentina won the world cup in 1986...

Neuer is obviously the best keeper in the world at the moment, but funnily enough Van Gaal had a massive row with Bayern Munich over him because he refused to buy him. He has some kind of bizarre issue with goal keepers. Surely Krul would have been a better choice for Holland's no.1 if he doesn't even trust his keeper to save penalties? It's weird.

Well he is in charge of the best keeper in the Premier League, and one that is most certainly on Neuer's level of abilities in De Gea, so there shouldn't be too much rotation, or issue with keepers at United.

What about Ben Amos?

Okay, so since 1970:

1970 - Brazil - Felix
Not really considered a world-class keeper

1974 - West Germany - Sepp Maier
One of the best goalkeepers of his era

1978 - Argentina - Ubaldo Fillol
Probably one of the better keepers at the World Cup, but not generally considered a world-class player

1982 - Italy - Dino Zoff
One of the best keepers in the world at the time

1986 - Argentina - Nery Pumpido
Not considered a particularly good keeper

1990 - West Germany - Bodo Illgner
Not considered that great before the World Cup, but his stock rose dramatically after it

1994 - Brazil - Claudio Taffarel
Generally considered quite a weak keeper, certainly not world-class

1998 - France - Fabien Barthez
Eccentric, but generally considered a very good keeper

2002 - Brazil - Marcos
Had a good tournament, but had not been thought of as a particularly good keeper before that

2006 - Italy - Gianluigi Buffon
Best keeper in the world at the time

2010 - Spain - Iker Casillas
Best keeper in the world at the time

So I make it that of the last 11 World Cups, four were won by teams with a genuinely world-class keeper, three were won by teams with "good" goalkeepers, and four were won by teams with goalkeepers who were considered distinctly mediocre. So I don't really accept the premise.

If team are that good, it really doesn't matter if the keeper isn't all that. He would have little to do anyway.

Brazil have demonstrated that in the past.
