Current cake trends ?
Andy Birkenhead

Looking on Facebook at many cake makers, it seems that the current trends in cakes are Minions and 'Gravity defying' cakes.
So, what ARE the most popular cake designs at the moment ?

No idea I still make fruit cakes, seed cakes and Victoria sponges, occasionally fairy cakes or butterfly cakes but unless the recipe has been in the family a while (usually 70-80) years I don't change what I bake. Only time I did many years ago everyone wondered where the lovely seed cake was I usually made !

No idea what's in but the cup cake trend is definitely on the way out

I didn't know there were trends in cakes. A cake is just a cake as far as I'm concerned

The closure of one cupcake chain doesn't mean that 'the cupcake trend is definitely on the way out'. The closure could have been due to loads of competitors.

Can I ask what you don't like about them? Is it just the look of them that you find off putting or something else?

Patterned roll cake I think will become a big thing. I think they look great.

What's a 'Patterned Roll cake', Victoria ?

It's like a Swiss roll but there is a pattern created with the batter (which is frozen before baking to preserve it). I have seen some really wonderful examples:

Also known as 'deco roll cake', 'Japanese roll cake'. I think the technique originated in Japan.

Patterned roll cake looks super cool! Like the OP I have also noticed the trend for gravity defying cakes - previously saw a lot of these on TV shows like Cake Wars which is perhaps where the idea has come from?

I have a friend and ex-colleague who makes the yummiest cupcakes. Everyone else´s are awful, even expensive ones from specialist bakeries (and the ones I bake myself).

To the people who say there are no cake trends - had you heard of a cake pop 10 years ago? Did you eat Arctic roll in the 1980s? Butterfly cakes a few years later? In the 1990s did you see cakes with photographs on top at many elderly people´s birthdays or wedding anniversary parties? 15 years ago people started having tiered wedding cakes that were made of different cheeses...

The traditional cakes continue and often have many fans, but the new trends come too, from TV shows, food magazines, foreign travel, experimentation, etc.

I only heard of cake pops when I went on the internet a few years ago. I've never seen one in real life.
My son had a birthday cake with his photo on a few years ago, it came from Asda.
Tiers of different cheeses aren't actually cakes.
Article roll is ice cream (and still very nice)
Butterfly cakes are still in fashion in my house

They're nothing but a bunch of cloying, sickly sweetness. They have no depth or subtlety. Far better cakes out there that need to shine!

Sorry its just it was one of the largest chains in the US and the accompanying article did seem to suggest a shift in tastes.

They don't have to be overly sugary sweet and minging! Most cakes can be made into cupcakes…then again if you don't really like buttercream then I can see why you may not like them, as most cupcakes have the buttercream on top. On some of my designs I try to keep it to a minimum. I hate too much of it myself, and prefer more cake.

The word 'cupcake' is a trend in itself. It's an Americanism and I hate it. There has been speculation that the term became popular along with Sex in the City!
A small UK cake used to be called a fairy cake or queen cake.
Some argue that there is a difference between the original fairy cake and the American cup cake but it is largely theoretical anyway as people these days just call any little cake a cupcake.
Maybe it's that 'queen cake' and 'fairy cake' are no longer politically correct!

Something I've been wondering about cupcakes is this -
Are American cupcakes bigger than British cupcakes ?

There may be speculation but judging by the weight (or lack of weight) of the characters, they didn´t eat too many cupcakes!
