Final episodes of soaps
I've come across a few of these recently and thought I'd link them here for anyone that's interested. What do you guys think of the conclusions to these shows? Do you like when they try to tie everything up or do you prefer that they're left a bit more open ended or on a cliffhanger? What way would you like to see your favourite soap end? A lot of shows seem to go for the wedding or birth or both scenario which I suppose gives them an excuse to have the whole cast celebrating together but is a bit ordinary in my opinion. Others leave it on a cliffhanger which isn't always a favourite among fans but I think makes for a much more interesting conclusion. Or would you like the finale to be where your favourite villain finally gets their comeuppance like what they did with Prisoner?
The shows I have included here are UK soaps and Aussie or American soaps that have all aired in the UK at some point. The only exception is American soap Capitol which I've included as it features one of the more random cliffhanger endings of any soap (I'm not including The Colbys alien abduction finale as I'm only looking at the continuing dramas that aired a few times a week). My favourite from this lot is probably Prisoner: Cell Block H as it was a happy ending of sorts for the prisoners without following the traditional wedding route. The worst is probably Albion Market although that may be down to the fact that there's a wailing baby in the background for half of the episode. Not used the links - my computer is veeeeery slow today!! So I'm going on memory!
I've seen some of them anyway..... BROOKSIDE: Think that was a nice final end to it there.......loved the end scene with Jimmy, and the 'in-joke' Grange Hill jingle at the finish! CROSSROADS: Ohh dear. The 1988 ending was finalised, and had a pleasant 'New beiginning' feel to it....driving off into the sunset! 2003 ending: The whole thing was a dream!! Sooooamericanised!! TAKE THE HIGH ROAD: Lovely gentle series - Scotlands answer to Emmerdale! It had a nice happy ending too.......and left enough for HIGH ROAD 2 (TBA )SONS & DAUGHTERS: My all-time favourite soap!!! What a classic ending. It came full circle and ended where it all began!! So nicely done. A full theme and montage at the end too, complete with 'THE END' SUNSET BEACH: Oh what a hoot this was! It ended in its same loony way - a dream within a dream! It was a happy ending anyway (shades of Crossroads?)PRISONER: Pleased that 'The Freak' got caught....but a bit limp ending. They should never have gotten rid of Bea!! FALCON CREST: Another good series....unfortunately failing by its last season - but at least it had a proper ending with Jane Wyman making that sad little speech in the final montage before the end credits. KNOTS LANDING: Another favourite of mine.....and it had a PROPER happy ending! All loose ends were tied up. (Until they brought it back for a couple of Specials!!) |

I agree with you about the Falcon Crest finale. It was the only one of the US soaps of the 80's to have a real nostalgic feel to it's finale even if it was just tacked on at the end. Dallas had all of the players in place for it to be a nostalgic farewell but instead they went for the barmy "It's A Wonderful Life" approach. |

What about A Country Practice? My mum still has the last episode on VHS. My main memory of it is the whole cast stood outside Wandin Valley hospital at the end waving to the camera and each saying goodbye in a really cheesy manner.
I still loved ACP though. Wish one of the channels would rerun it. The Brookside ending felt very Phil Redmond with Jimmy basically delivering a Redmond rant at the end. Loved the scene with Jimmy flooding the houses and changing the sign to Brookside Closed. |

Are you kidding about a High Road follow up or is this something that's actually being planned???

Dallas had all of the players in place for it to be a nostalgic farewell but instead they went for the barmy "It's A Wonderful Life" approach. That DALLAS ending (original) was a travesty!! It was like - "WHATT??" (Love the new series by the way.....whenever it returns to Channel 5!) |
