.....The standard of commentating is not quite back to that of the classic era but it is getting there. I thought ITV edged it. They also won in the battle of the co-commentators. The panels were equally good and so too the artier audio/visual aspects from Ary Barroso's "Aquilera de Brasil" which of course marked the start of samba in 1939 to Stevie Wonder's Song in the Key of Life from 1976, "Another Star". A special mention to Tim Vickery who hot on the heels of that excellent 5 Live spot was a big plus for the BBC and Henry reading Baudelaire was a very, very special moment. Happy is he who can with a vigorous wing propel towards the luminous and serene realms. Cheers.

I suspect this will be Lawrenson's last world cup final as a co-commentator. Or even his last world cup, period. Getting a bit long in the tooth. Time to freshen things up a bit.

He seems almost annoyed by football at the best of times, but particularly in this tournament most of his time was spent whining about players falling over and calling them all girls. It's like a slow nervous breakdown.

The adverts seem to make all the difference especially when you look at the viewing figures.

I absolutely agree with that. I actually like Martin Keown's voice, he would make a good DJ!

Despite his whining I think I would miss him. I hope he gives it a few more years.

It's a bit like listening to a bloke standing next to you in a pub when a match is on. He's very much old school and way back when he started as a pundit, then what he said was maybe relevant but he's a like a broken record now.

ITV always get trounced in the WC Final ratings because people naturally gravitate towards the BBC in such instances.
A lot of people complain about adverts & the like, but they don't affect the actual match time, so I just don't see the problem; plus there just seems to be a cliched narrative that ITV's coverage is 'rubbish' & BBC's is the best ever, despite the fact there probably is little or no difference in it.
I watched it on ITV, as I preferred their line-up of pundits & their commentators too, but I'm in an obvious minority.

i think alot of folk would have watched BBC live, but record or catchup with the ITV punditry, etc.
i am just doing that now, Itv pundits are much more fun, with Oneil and Wright making me laugh a number of times, and I still think Hoddle show be England manager, very good thinker.
