Hi all.

OK, this is a long shot, because my Web searches suggest that this is impossible, but does anyone know if there is any way to re-tune this old Technika TV?

The problem is that the little satellite dish icon (under which the re-tune option would be located) is greyed-out and cannot be selected.

I have found other people experiencing the same problem, and the only response they get is that the tuner is fried, and the TV is therefore useless. However, I know this is not the case with mine, because it still receives some muxes, including the BBC channels, perfectly. ITV and other muxes are missing. So the tuner must still be working.

Is there some secret way to perform some kind of factory-reset or similar on these models to get it to re-tune?

Hopeful thanks in advance!

Most TVs have a Factory Reset, Default Settings, First Time Install or similarly worded option buried in the menus somewhere. They all do pretty much the same thing which is restore the TV to it's "out of the box" state.

That should mean that it goes through the same set-up procedure it performed the very first time you turned it on. Which should include a full re-tune.

Just a matter of finding it.

Obviously the tuner can't be duff, because if it was that it wouldn't affect the operation of the menus - most likely it's corruption of the EEPROM - a VERY common fault on the cheap junk sets.

You 'may' be able to reload the factory defaults, but you would need to access the service menu - and that depends on what actual make the set is?. As Technika is nothing but a badge used by Tesco there's no service or spares, and it's hard to know what make it 'might' be.

Assuming it's a Vestel?, you might try:

"Press “MENU” and 4,7,2,5"

And see if that works - it does on my Hitachi/Vestel - which periodically trashes it's EEPROM, a common fault with Vestel.

That Technika model is made by UMC, a Slovakian OEM who make a lot of the smaller Technika TVs for Tesco, have their own eMotion brand and hold the licence to sell TVs under the Blaupunkt brand name in the UK and elsewhere.

You could contact their helpline: http://www.umc-uk.co.uk/helplineinfo.php

Wow, thanks very much for all the replies, one and all!

It looks like "MENU, 8, 8, 8, 8" may perform a factory reset - I will try it and report back!

Thanks again!

Didn't work, sadly.

In DVB mode, pressing MENU then 8 four times does absolutely nothing.

In any other mode, the first press of the 8 key clears the menu and selects analogue TV channel 8.

Looks like the thing is bricked

Thanks for the help anyway!

Give UMC's helpline a ring, they may be able to help.
http://www.umc-uk.co.uk/helplineinfo.php

If the TV is completely bricked though they will probably refer you back to Tesco, who aren't going to be of much help if the TV is out of warranty

Worth a try though, you never know.

Rather than ring them, I've completed their query form, and they've promised a reply within 1 working day - which sounds good!

I will report back if/when I hear anything.

They may try it on but the TV warranty is nothing to do with Tesco. EU rules give you a 2 year guarantee and Tesco have been forced to honour this in the past. The Sale of Goods Act gives you 6 years protection (not warranty). Your contract is with Tesco not the manufacturer and it is to Tesco you should make your representations.

No they don't, and no they haven't - why are posting this complete lie again?.

It's myth
"Actually the EU law talks about how long you’ve got to complain, not how long goods should actually last. And while it’s minimum 2 years, in the UK we actually get SIX years to do the same"

There was a link on here a while back where Tescos were forced to comply with the 2 year rule.

Here is a link re 2 year warranty. Considering it has been in force 12 years now I am surprised dealers such as yourselves are still trying to deny it just to protect your profits.

Have you actually read the Directive? That is the one on the EU website as actually passed by the European Parliament?

http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/...9L0044:en:HTML

If you had you would see that it is is not in any way shape or form a guarantee/warranty. In fact the word warranty does not appear anywhere in it. It is not that far removed from the UK Sale of Goods Act. And no-one says the SoGA is a 6 year guarantee do they?

No, there was a link on there where Tesco complied with the 6 year SOGA - and people kept incorrectly mentioning the non-existent EU 2 year warranty.

Never been in force at all, try reading the legislation - or speak to a professional

If I might be permitted to drag this thread back on-topic again, I have had a reply from UMC support.

They have e-mailed me a PDF of the user manual, and it appears that the original remote that came with the TV has TWO different menu buttons, labelled "LCD MENU" and "DVB MENU".

You can guess which one of these the "MENU" button on my remote calls up, and which one it is impossible to obtain without the original remote, and you can also guess which one contains the re-tune option!

Some old Sharp sets were like that - essentially analogue TV's with a digital 'box' added inside - not really an integrated part of the set.

Without the correct remote (or at least a similar one) you're a bit stuffed.

Strange then, that in Europe except here things come with a 2 year guarantee. What is more something bought in one country can be fixed under it in another.

Again, you're just making it up - READ THE LEGISLATION!!.

You also need to reconsider your idea that warranty repairs are always pan-European, this isn't always the case.

Could you please point out to me the clause in the Directive that says manufacturers or retailers have to offer any sort of guarantee or warranty at all, much less that they must offer a two year one. Because I have read every single word of the directive several times and I'm stuffed if I can see where it says that.

UMC sells the remote control with buttons for the LCD Menu and the DVB Menu for £20 including P&P.

Another poster has linked to cheaper third party remotes:

Hi,
I have one of these technika tvs with the same problem
Cure is to use a one for all remote
I used the Urc 6440 which is a good one to have as it is upgrade able
Use one for all code 2426
On this particular remote the key marked text becomes the digital tv menu !
There you can do a first time install to find any new digital channels
Cheers Pete
