I agree iPhones are seen as "cool" with the youth, especially the iPhone 5c. Go into McDonalds on weekend and I would say it seems 80% of the 15-20 year olds have an iphone 5c

The opinion that the iPhone is a toy is idiotic.

Customisation gets mentioned a lot. Maybe I'm unusual, but I spend more using apps than being bothered about customising screens that I see when I'm not using apps.

Widgets get mentioned a lot, but I've never been convinced people do much more than put weather /news / sport ticker type things on the home screen.

Not to say that's not useful, but I don't think its enough of a differentiation to warrant describing Android as something way more functional than a toy.

There is also a prevailing double standard - if iPhones are perceived as being popular, its because they are some sort of fashion icon. If Android phones are perceived as being popular, its because they are trouncing iOS in terms of market share.

My favourite is when people call iPhone owners sheep. When given that android has the larger market share (we know this because android users mention it at every given opportunity) surely by the very definition of the 'sheep' insult owning an android phone would make you a sheep. Since less people have iPhones that have android phones.

There does seem to be a prevailing sense that some Android users literally can't get their head around the idea that some people just have a different preference to them.

Its as though some people think If only people knew what I know they would never buy an iPhone.

So the only possible explanation for people buying iPhones is that they have somehow been tricked into buying them, or just don't know any better. Because if they did know better they would never buy them.

The reality is more likely to simply be that people actually do like and prefer them, difficult as that seems to be for some people to believe.

Its not that people don't have a sense of humour.

Its just that it isn't funny.

No, there is a reality that some people - regardless of the platform - think that their choice is the definitive one, and therefore no other platform should ever be considered by anyone. Ever.

You come across like that with iPhones at times ....

This sort of thing goes back years in tech. Anyone recall the days of Spectrum/BBC B rivalries? Or the next generation of Amiga/ST (I went for the Acorn Archimedes - that was effectively the winner in some ways).

If I have, I certainly have never meant to.

I think I tend more to disagree with the sentiment that people who buy iPhones are idiots.

I don't think I ever say anything along the lines of people who don't buy iPhones are idiots in the first place though.

Don't interpret me saying:

I don't think people who buy iPhones are idiots.

as

I think people who don't buy iPhones are idiots.

Don't interpret me saying:

I think that criticism of Apple is ridiculous and petty

as

I think iPhones are better than any other phone na na na na na

My least favourite from the apple owners is 'don't knock it because you can't afford it'. It's cringe worthy. Actually cringe worthy.

It's an utterly bizarre thought process that what you have and enjoy must be what everyone else has and enjoys.

I agree completely - but I definitely think most of it comes from one side of the discussion far more than the other.

The whole iSheep crap basically argues that people can't just buy iPhones because they like them - there has to be some other explanation, e.g. because their mates have them, or because they've been hoodwinked by Apple, or they wouldn't buy them if only they knew what they were missing.

Its bizarre.

Nope, it is pretty much equal sniping from both sides, and the type of sniping you see varies on where you're looking.

If you browse the Apple Insider forums, that is unbelievably biased. At least these forums tend to have fairly equal hatred of each platform.

But what do I know, I'm intending to go back to using my Nokia 808 ....

Yeah I remember, but back then the rivalry was kept to computer fairs and dark murky computer clubs lol. Half the room on ST's the other half on Amiga's.

Be very careful about making that assumption - a lot of the permissions available to apps in android are a lot more extensive than those in iOS. Plus with android it's a take it all or leave it all situation - you can't pick and choose which permissions an app will have - it's all or nothing (unless you start rooting or custom roming). With iOS you can toggle the access apps have on or off. Also watch out for apps on android that ask for permissions they blatantly don't need (free "torch" apps are notoriously bad for that).

I think the S5 prime isn't going to be sold outside of South Korea. However I'm more than pleased with the S5. The screen is gorgeous bad the processor is plenty fast. I also don't think that 2K will make much difference on a 5 inch screen. I've used the LG G3 and I honestly think that the S5 has the better screen.

I had an A3000 in my teens and my sister had an A310. Loved using Risc Os, along with playing games like Bughunter 1&2 as well as Nevryon (R-type Clone).

That being that if you have not bothered/needed much with one phone you are as likely not to bother/learn on another.

Android out of the box is now more iOS like in the sense that most of the settings to enable you to do all the interesting geeky stuff is disabled by default. So for an average user it works very much the same as iOS.

You have to go into obscure parts of the set-up to enable things like side loading and unsigned apps now

Also to get into development mode you need to know the specific way of doing so. There is no way to do it with one setting change.

Some of the really interesting apps need to have the phone rooted too.

Having said that I really can't stand Samsung phones. They hate having to use Android, their handsets are way overpriced compared to the likes of Nexus and good luck if you are unfortunate enough to have a problem with the phone as their customer service is absolutely appalling.
