In that case it should be able to pick up the Freeview channels. Though if you have never used it for this before,or it's been a few years since you last did, you will need to set it off on an auto tune process before you will get anything.

Should be fairly easy to find in the menu system.

Unfortunately they did the usual Korean thing of fitting seriously sub-standard capacitors in the PSU, causing huge failure rates, and (even worse) killing the HDD's in the sets.

I don't think I've ever seen the PVR working in one?, it's normal to repair the PSU and disconnect the faulty HDD rather than spend the extra money replacing it.”

Lol xx

You are so kind but it's not making any sense to me

Ty.

Nope never tried it, never had Freeview.

Because I've had Sky so long and I had an old TV at set up, prob we all did, I have just bought old big Tvs when one has failed. I prefer the picture quality on them but when the last one went the prices of big old TVs seemed to rocket and I didn't want to pay £80 for one when they had been zero to £40 before. That's when son brought round this set and plugged it in.

It has a silver surround and black screen and sits on a small pedestal. Not square as this image though

Almost but not quite. The silver surround I mentioned goes all the way around the black screen

Have called Sky and they offered to send out engineer at cost to myself so I've cancelled it and now need to replace it.

Any advice on that please?

The thing I most enjoy is the pause and record function but I expect that I'll have to live with it. Kids don't live at home any more so only watch a few channels - hasn't really been worth £23.99 a month for some time.

Any help is good xx”

If you tell Sky you are leaving, they might wave the charge to persuade you to stay.

Sky HD boxes are rated as the best across the board.

You can update to 2T HD sky box for around 50 pounds - it depends on who you get, but some of their advisers will pull some really good deals out of the hat if it means they can persuade you to stay for another 12 months.

Worth a go at haggling - ask them to ring you back if you are paying for calls.

I told them - I rang only to cancel. They couldn't waive the charge although they brought it down.

I don't have HD

Adviser offered 10% off for next 12 months.

I asked them to call me back and they did,

I think maybe I should not have put about the charge in my post. I have been thinking about leaving Sky because now my sons have left I watch very few channels and rarely the Sky ones, whereas back in the day we watched Friends etc.

The post really is about how to replace Sky and what with? As you all can see, I have little knowledge of the TV world and the only interest is to get a picture on my TV.

Is there any chance that you can find the model number?
It will be on a label somewhere on the TV.
If you can do this then we can look for a user manual (which I assume you don't have) and guide you through setting up the digital channels - hopefully the aerial appears to be working (at least in one room)

It does depend on who you talk to - I'm surprised they didn't offer to send out a recon (more modern) box to see if that solved the problem.

Presumably, their technical people have run the checks they can do from their end?

What about broadband catch-up TV? You don't even need a TV licence for that - just avoid live transmissions.

Or combine both, such as with Youview...

I think all who have replied appreciate that and, despite the numerous things that may be wrong with your setup, are trying to at least to help you get a picture back on your TV.

I asked....

No information has been forthcoming as yet and it seems like your TV is capable of receiving Freeview channels (even though you thought that it didn't) and that the aerial seems to work at least in one room.

It also appears that "my son still has freeview box attached to tv upstairs and that works fine which must mean aerial is ok. Yes?" Have you tried that box with your Humax TV?

At the moment we're no further forward and similar suggestions are being made in various replies.
I'd like to see this problem sorted but more help and succinct, accurate information is needed

Sorry! It was my birthday weekend and I drank, ate and made merry.

It's Humax LB 17E

It's a fairly old TV (circa 2004 - 2006) and is confirmed to have a Freeview tuner.

The bad news is that hen's teeth are easier to find than the user manual (even when it was first introduced)

However, it shouldn't be too complicated. There should be a 'Menu' button on the remote and various options given for 'Digital Tuning' or 'First Time/Initial Setup' (or similar.
Hopefully by following the on-screen instructions it shouldn't be too difficult to tune the set in.
Alternatively, can your son (who gave you the set) be of assistance

Thanks, I'll give it a whirl. Does that mean I don't need a Freeview box? That it is in the set?

Son bought it at car boot sale for his bedroom but left it in my garage, silly him, so when my last set broke down I fished it out and plugged it into Sky.

If I do the above while I still have Sky will I lose the Sky signal?

Sorry if questions are ridiculous!

You won't lose anything. The Sky box provides video to your TV via a scart (or HDMI) cable. The coax connected to your aerial uses the TV tuner to create the video.

To watch the sky box you select to view the video from the scart cable. To watch freeview you select the TV tuner. You change over from one source to the other using the TV remote.
