If both teams are drawing at 90 minutes, they both go out.

No.

Just....no.

Am I the only one who thought the tight Argentina v Holland game was a thriller compared to the boring 8-goal match the previous day, in which the outcome was sealed in the first 20 minutes of the game?

Or we just kill a member of each team until someone scores

Yes. I value competitiveness in a game, and it is necessary to make a match thrilling, but Holland vs. Argentina was an absolute bore. It's only thrilling if it looks like a goal is likely to happen.

Having said that, this thread is obviously ridiculous. Like so many we've seen whilst the World Cup has been on.

Good defensive play is also good football.

True. Unfortunately, neither Holland nor Argentina demonstrated a good, defensive display, more they displayed a toothless, poor attacking display which hardly challenged the opposition defence. They were effectively stopped by one man (Mascherano for Argentina, Vlaar for Holland).

It was a poor showing from two teams with bundles of talent. The likes of Messi, Higuain, Robben and Van Persie were, for 120 minutes, poor and underwhelming.

If you want an example of a thrilling game which finished 0-0, I'll refer you to the Europa League final between Sevilla and Benfica.

I think you're in a minority. Argentina-v-Netherlands was almost as boring as Iran-v-Nigeria.

how about a LOWEST RANKING RULE?
if it's a draw at the end, lowest ranked team in the FIFA rankings wins!

One rule I would like to see is playing the shootout at the start of the game and only using it as a tie breaker if the score is level at the end of extra time. That way, the team who loses the shootout would still have the opportunity to win the game the normal way.

Interesting, but could lead to all sorts of issues.

One shootout losing team would feel incredible pressure to win the game if they know they lost the shootout. The team that won the shootout might just play for the draw, attack little and just defend.

The drama of the shootout would also just diminish.

So I've seen a few threads on this "football" forum like this... Is there any way we can instate an IQ test before allowing people to post? I'd assume a forum wants intelligent discussion but there's not a lot of it about?...

You could decide games on shots on goal. That would encourage attacking play by both sides

You'd just have no-hoper shots peppered from miles out in order to bump the stats then.

If we really want to encourage attacking play we could make it so that the team who gets the ball in that net thing the most gets the points?

Nah. The goals get wider and the ball gets smaller every 10 minutes into the second half ...

Why stop at that?

If the game is a goalless draw after 90 minutes the players could be beheaded in the centre circle and their families sold into slavery.

Unleash a tiger onto the pitch, and only remove it once a goal is scored. To be fair to those who have to clean up the mess after the game, first goal wins.

Before the game, we round up all of the immediate family members of the players on the pitch. For every 5 minutes a goal isn't scored, a family member dies.
