how about a LOWEST RANKING RULE?
if it's a draw at the end, lowest ranked team in the FIFA rankings wins! |

If both teams are drawing at 90 minutes, they both go out.

We regret to announce that there will be no winners of the World Cup this time round, because both semi-finals were drawn and there are no teams left!
![]() I think that's fair enough |

Best not start on Test cricket, eh?
As for football, regardless of whether it's a league or cup tie, after 90 minutes if it's a league game (ie first round of the World Cup) if it's a draw, then they should take penalties (not five each, but first to miss) for an extra point. I know that means teams could defend for 90 minutes and grab two points instead of one, (the loser gets one) which is probably the downside, but it could sort out tight groups. |

There's absolutely no reason or call to mess around with league systems.

We wouldn't have had a winner last time out, because the two teams were more interested in kicking each other than the ball.
