) showing a loss in the accounts lodged with companies house does not mean the business is not solvent. It could do but it needn't be the case. Lots of companies invest profits or pay them as dividends etc.

Lots of companies do. Companies that deal in millions of pounds not £1,200. He has no dividends, unless his dividends paid for the new blinds in his mum's spare room that he uses as his business HQ. Living the dream or what.
