Because religion doesn't give you a free pass when it comes to wanting to deny other people the same civil rights as you expect to enjoy. Discrimination = homophobia. And holding that view is a damn sight more offensive than minding it and people who do hold it shouldn't be surprised at the response.
Homophobic doesn't just mean 'scared of' or 'dislikes' and being religious does not excuse it, anymore that being political would excuse it. There are many, many Christians who don't think like that, so she has a choice. (And in Danielle's case, she seems to have done quite a few things that might conflict with her take on religion on the outside).
Some people seem to think they can offend or discriminate against whom they like, as long as they cite 'religion'.
