Local residents have been informed that our exchange will qualify for upgrade to fibre under the BDUK initiative. We are a Market 1 EO line for all connections. How is this upgrade likely to be done and is it a challenging one for the engineers?

My building is just across the road so how much would it cost if I get fibre when I can?

BT have been trialling adding copper cabinets for exchange only lines. They might do this and then add a normal FTTC cabinet alongside.

The other option is full fibre to the premises but that can cost a lot more.

Or you might not get anything for a while, the exchange can qualify but it doesn't guarantee that everyone connected to it will get something. If anything they'll probably do the easiest/cheapest bits first (from personal experience).

Perhaps I should explain the geography a little. Imagine a bicycle wheel with the exchange being the hub and all the properties being the spokes. That pretty much describes us perfectly. The exchange was built around 27 years ago to serve our community exclusively, there are no easy or hard bits, there are no offshoot properties miles away. The furthest outreach is a 1/4 of a mile from the exchange with all those properties being on the periphery reducing in distance as the other properties come towards the centre.

As said before the money to upgrade is part of the rural upgrade programme. We have already been told it will not be FTTP. I was just curious as to how Openreach do the work.

So is the diagram showing multiple cabinets then? The exchange serves less than a thousand properties.

I noticed they have been digging up our road the exchange building now has a green box out side so hopefully it will be live soon meaning I can get fiber.

Those are all standard copper cabinets.

FTTC cabinets are larger and have vents, like https://community.bt.com/t5/image/se...E7C0A?v=mpbl-1

That'd be a question for BT.

If they're brand new, then maybe you were on an EO line which they have made not-exchange only so that they can install FTTC, or maybe they're splitting the area up a bit by adding more copper cabinets which means that they can put the FTTC cabinets closer to houses. You'll probably find the FTTC cabinets appear next to or near those in the future.

I don't work for BT though so that's just speculation

The pictures of FTTC cabinets I've seen look more like these (one closest to the camera)

Note the vents in the doors. And note that the cabinet furthest from the camera looks a bit like the one in your pictures.

The first two pictures on that page are not FTTC cabinets, they were mistakenly labelled as such as explained here

Fiber checker says now when I put in my post code

Your area is enabled for Superfast Fibre but your cabinet is not ready yet so you can’t place an order today. It is in our plans to be upgraded and we update this info

So hopefully I should get it soon.

Those are FTTC cabinets.

When you can use them is anyone's guess. If the fibre and power supplies are in place then it could be a month or two - assuming that your phone line is connected to one of them. But if there is a problem getting fibre to the cabinet, or if there is a problem arranging a power supply then this could push it out.

IIRC my cabinet was installed in November and the first connections (including mine) went in just after new years'.

Does http://www.dslchecker.bt.com say anything?
