CS: Was killing Susan Barlow off a mistake?
I read the topic about Adam Barlow's abortion being a retcon with no ambiguity. Susan came back to the show with her aborted fetus now a child and when Mike found out, she fled and got killed in a car accident. Was killing off Susan just to give Mike and Ken something else to feud about as well as giving him a third child a mistake? Susan was Peter's twin and his biological sister. I know that he and Tracy have a good relationship (I think) and he has two other half-brothers, but twins are usually close.
What was your take on it? |

Yes by all accounts she wasn't a nice character.
Ken Baldwin and Ken Barlows children really should all be in th show. Make use of the streets original surname. |

Not sure whether killing Susan off was a mistake or not - but it did at least give Peter a chance to shine, realising he'd have to spend the rest of his life without his twin sister. There was a great scene during Christmas Day's ep in 2001 when he got drunk (nowt changes, does it?), blamed Deirdre for everything going wrong in the Barlow household, had a proper go at her dropping her knickers for any old scumbag, accused Ken of being a pitiful doormat by taking Deirdre back in time and time again, then got a hard slap from Deirdre in response. Deirdre stormed off, leaving Ken to cook the Christmas dinner while she... well, while she sought refuge in the bed of a sleazy lothario and promptly proved everything Peter had just said to her was 100% correct.

*VOM* The fact Tracy Barlow also had a taste of the Dev machine has no bearing on it whatsoever! I can't really remember Susan returning to CS at that point before her death (car crash in Scotland off screen, wasn't it?) but I can't see what she'd bring to the Street at present. |

I've just started Coronation Street 1988 on YouTube, so Susan's just recently had the abortion and left. She was an absolute cow! Not because she had an abortion (although why, in the circumstances, she didn't have had it done without letting on she was pregnant in the first place) but just generally. She was a spoiled brat with a strong sense of entitlement.
The last I heard, the actor who played Susan is now selling real estate. |

I can vaguely remember her being around in the 80s but missed her brief 2001 return and death. I do think it was a mistake to kill her off though what purpose did her death serve? It led to Ken and Mike arguing over Adam they would have argued with one another regardless. As the daughter of the shows longest serving character she had a place on the show. Despite being around on and off from her birth in 1965 till her death in 2001 she was somewhat of a blank canvas she'd been absent most of her life living in Scotland so we knew very little about her they could have done anything with her upon her return.

IMO It was a mistake to kill off a character like Susan Barlow who could have had so much potential if properly recasted. Given the right actress she could have been important to the show as a daughter to Ken Barlow and twin and closet confidente to Peter (Even more so then Ken).
What makes it worse was the manner of it. It was done to facilitate a short and forgettable storyline and the introduction of a character (Adam) who made little impact on the show. It was definitely a case of a missed opportunity. |

I think it was a mistake as it was done only to bring Adam in and I don't really think he added anything to the show - certainly not long term. Susan wasn't popular during her 80s stint but that was because the actress wasn't very good - recast she could have had potential. Geberally I dislike characters being killed off screen and for no other reason than to introduce a new character (especially a child) anyway.
However, I suppose it has given Peter another level of sadness - he lost the person he was closest to so much less support for him in his troubles plus the guilt of having partially caused it (he broke Susan's confidence about Adam existing to Ken during an argument which caused Susan to flee as she assumed Mike would come after them and crashed the car) so it added an extra dimension to him and his relationship with Ken. |

Like Peter, would I be correct in thinking that she was played by different actress's each stint so she's instantly forgettable?

Didn't they do a Sam Mitchell and cast a previous actress to play her after someone else had already played the role?

I never saw any episodes with her in, but it was a mistake from what I know. She's a Barlow! They killed so many off, especially at the beginning. would love to see scenes with her/peter/ken.
