I just leave the aspect ratio set to 4:3 which is the "normal" setting just like it was on my Sony CRT. This will then display 16:9 if that is the format on the particular input used even though 4:3 is selected.
When used with Sky on 1080i a 4:3 signal is expanded to fattyvision so I then select aspect ratio control on the TV which comes up as 4:3 even though the displayed picture is 16:9 (auto selected from Sky 1080i at 16:9 since 1080i is 16:9) so I press enter which manually forces the display to 4:3. To release the 4:3 forcing I just select another input then back again that puts the TV into auto (4:3 selected). This is easier than it sounds as I have a Harmony remote with macros. Before my Sky firmware upgrade that broke Automatic I never had to do anything, it just auto selected.
I should point out my TV is a few years old and I don't know if new Pannies are the same, I hope so.
