Why do ITV do it, even though ED won they didn't win by much and it hurt's ED as well. I mean I know last year when they were up against each other ED was winning but that was because it was the whole Cameron siege storyline.

Also do we really need 7 episodes of ED in one week.

ED won?thats good to hear, always knew it could be the second soap most people have a recording device these days anyway so it doesnt really matter if they clash every now and then.

It seems to me itv are playing dirty at the moment scheduling these clashes and doing away with the restrictions concerning how many times you can vote for the bsas. Makes me think they are scared at how well eastenders is doing.

ED will never be the second soap, actually it can, as EE Is the first.

Well said. People forget the ratings are made up anyway.

How are the ratings up? EastEnders rarely gets to 7 million in the overnights anymore.

ITV are in competition with the BBC. The clashes are scheduled to reduce EastEnders overnight viewing figures. They don't owe each other anything. ITV can schedule Emmerdale around the clock if it suits them.

I just think because ED slaughtered EE in the rating last year ED and ITV think it will happen again. The problem being ED isn't as good as last year and by doing what they are doing it's back firing on them.

How is it "backfiring on ITV" if ED beat EE in the overnight ratings then??

I'm struggling to understand that one.

"Hey guys, we beat EastEnders in the ratings last night apparently."

"What the fff?? ... Damn and blast it, this is backfiring on us big time, we were meant to get trounced by those buggers at the Beeb."

ED 4.98 EE 4.5 so even though ED won it wasn't by much.

Agreed mate, but it's hardly backfiring.
5m on a blistering hot, sunny evening is as good as Emmy could hope for I'd imagine.
Particularly as it was all about Bernice discovering she was annoying and Andy's Lord Nelson arm.
Hardly riveting stuff.
They must be absolutely delighted I would have thought?!

They are annoying, especially since I watch both, but they're going to be a regular thing over the next couple of months since they're catching up on episodes missed during the World Cup, and ITV know it's an easy way to dent EE while leaving Emmerdale relatively unscathed.

I'm actually a week or two behind with Emmerdale at the moment so these hour long episodes won't make catching up any easier, 6 episodes a week was more than enough, well that and the fact every time I think about watching I remember Adam Barton exists and get put off.

With Tivo and Sky Plus boxes, internet iplayers, and the plethora of +1 channels and repeats on Freeview nowadays, there's no reason whatsoever to moan about schedule clashes.

If the Beeb (or any channel for that matter) don't like the heat, then I say get out of the kitchen.
Why should one broadcaster schedule its programmes to appease another?
One it is in direct competition with no less.

That's a quite ridiculous notion frankly.

Technically, Emmerdale will be the second soap until Coronation Street finishes in terms of chronology, making EastEnders the third.

Surprising that they're potentially holding onto viewers and people who watch both presumably aren't switching over halfway through though, I'm loving Emmerdale at the moment but the last couple of hour long episodes have been some of the weakest of recent times.

Nope Eastenders is doing really well. In the official ratings (which are made up but oh well) it comes out much higher than the overnights. It's also been reviewed a lot more positively by the majority of critics. Sure it's still got a long way to go but it's improving all the time.
