As a grown up woman, I didn't find this at all shocking.
It seems that some think this was a sexual discussion and, therefore, bad.

Women have periods and use things to absorb it.
I would not recommend make-up sponges.
No more 'shocking' than a child being taken to A&E with a pen lid up their nose.

She was at work and didn't have any tampons. Someone suggested that she used a make-up sponge, but she couldn't retrieve it later and had to go to A&E for a tweezer job.
