It's a HORRIBLE way to serve a burger. Brioche buns are greasy on top, due to the egg wash. A burger is supposed to be picked up to be eaten. Picking up a brioche bun is horrible.

Why such a trend for serving burgers in brioche buns?

Just a trend.

It'll pass. Next it'll be ciabatta bun.

Then a square of foccaccia.

Then not a bun, but slices of chargrilled sourdough.

I thought we'd done ciabatta!

One bite into it, and the entire contents exited out of the opposite side!

And the burgers are so fat you can't get your gob round it. Another pet peeve of mine is when they put mayo, mustard or other sauce in it without it saying so on the menu, I've had many a burger ruined! I have always wondered why McDs put gherkin on the burgers, the default should be plain and they would probably save millions if they reduced gherkin wastage!

Jamie Oliver is a follower with no culinary talent, expertise or recognition.

He is not an innovator.

A knife and fork solves that problem.

I was in a pub in Manchester City Centre about three or four years ago, ordered burger and chips and the burger came between two slices of white sliced bread.

I await the burger cut in half and served in a French stick, or baton.

I don't like the current brioche bun trend. I just don't think it works with a burger but they're everywhere

It stops me ordering something if it comes in a brioche bun.

Wasn't that the way the original burgers were served?

Heston Blumenthal encountered this in the USA when trying to make the perfect burger.

Are brioche buns a 'sweet' bread?

EDIT: I've just had a look and they are more 'rich' than 'sweet'; buns fortified with egg and butter.

I find brioche can taste a bit sweet, yes.

I noticed M&S are advertising 'posh dogs' which come in a brioche roll. I liked the look of them until I saw the brioche roll

A good burger should also be messy in my opinion, if it's cooked just right the juices should flow.

Talking of trends, did I ever see one that was onions pickled in balsamic vinegar?

bit of an over exaggeration. Why not ask for a plain one like most people do when the don't like the sauce. Less people would go to mcd's if the burgers were plain.

Yeah, because Man V Food is all about fine dining and not stuffing your face...

On the rare occasions I visit McDonalds, I always used to ask for a plain (cheese) burger.

But on a visit a few weeks ago, I ask for it as-is. I found that the different ingredients resulted in a synergy of sorts - the only individual flavours I could pick out were the meat and the cheese, with everything else combining into a delicious almost sweet relish-like taste.

Plenty of the places on Man v Food and DDD are far more fancy with burgers than UK places.

Many times i've seen brioche buns and pretzel buns and potato rolls etc.

Probably the burger trends in the UK are coming from these shows.
