I'm moving house soon and I'm choosing broadband and tv.

I don't have access to BT infinity however I appear to be able to order "TV essential with unlimited broadband" which comes with a Youview + box. My question is will the youview box play through the router - meaning lots of buffering since speed checkers suggest I'll be ranging from 2-5mbs.

Or will the youview box be connected to an aerial? Before I got to checkout it asked about whether I would like an aerial installed.

My goal is to watch BT sport and record the programs using the youview box but I'm really confused whether it will receive transmissions from my broadband (meaning it would be slow / ineffective) or aerial.

YouView uses both.

It uses the aerial to receive the main Freeview channels live and Broadband for the catchup function and the extra channels you get with BT TV.

If you look hard enough on the BT website it does tell you the minimum broadband speed required for the service.

The YouView box will let you view and record the Freeview channels you can get via the aerial. Use the Freeview postcode checker to see which channels you can expect.

The broadband connection will give you access to the catchup services like BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 40D etc. via the YouView box. Without BT Infinity you won't be able to get the BT Extra TV channels.


Be careful about BT Sport here - while the BT website says you can get BT Sport via broadband I think what they mean is you can do so via a PC, Mac or Tablet. To view BT Sport using a YouView box you need to have BT Infinity, as with the BT Extra TV channels.

You can get BT Sports over ADSL lines but you do need a good line speed.

I know with BT Broadband you can get BT Sports over ADSL using the BT Sport app on a PC, Mac, or Tablet but I didn't think you could get it on a YouView box as the OP wants to do. I could well be mistaken in this but I'm going by the small print on the BT website

After further digging around on the BT website I see that bit of the BT website is out of date and that in other places it says you can get BT Sport on a Youview box without Infinity. I'm still not clear however if it is available on all exchanges, or only on some of them.

You can get BT Sport over ADSL BUT there are a lot a caveats.
1) The exchange must not be Infinity enabled (not just that you haven't taken out fibre),
2) You need a minimum speed of 5.25 Mbs existing customers or 6.5 new customers (the higher speed for new customers is to ensure that when the line settles it will still be fast enough).
3) Your exchange must be copper multicast enabled.
4) You can only record/watch one channel at a time.
