Both my son and I were driving along and he had a signal and I didn't have any signal at all. Generally, his signal is always stronger....

We are both with 3.

Why's this?

iPhone doesn't just show signal "strength" its also showing "quality". So its possible your Son's phone has an unusable signal for a voice call. Did either of you try making calls?

The "bars" on phones are not comparable sadly. Unless you can get a display of dbm which would then be comparable.

Its unusual but could have happened with two identical phones side by side. Two S3's could have logged into different masts and failed to roam, and two iPhones could have done the same.

Put two phones side by side on the same network and they will generally show different, unless there is an extremely strong local mast (e.g. tower, or home repeater etc)

This happened the other day. My boyfriend and I both have S5's, mine is 3 months older than his. We were in Nottingham, on the bus and his signal showed 4G, mine H+.

Another possibility is the internal phone antenna is more sensitive on one phone than the other.

I live in a marginal signal area, my crappy Moto defy+ will have a low but perfectly useable 3G signal however with most current smartphones I've tried its emergency calls only or searching..... Wish today's phones had the antenna designs like the old Nokia 6210. That held onto a signal like a limpet!
