Hi

Bit of a convoluted, weird one - but I'll try and summarise

Had some building work done recently. We've got a new kitchen and wanted to mount a tv on a wall. I asked the builder to trail Cat6 cable throughout house, including to kitchen.

The builder has - to his credit - terminated the cat6 in the wall where the TV will be and also installed a dual aerial cable. It might be RG6 but I'm not 100^% sure.

The issue is that the other end of the aerial cable terminates in the cellar, not on the roof next to the aerial or near the existing aerial box in the living room

I dont think I have enough aerial cable to trail under the living room floorboards to join up with the existing aerial box, so effectively the aerial cable is useless. It's ok that the cat6 terminates in the cellar - I'm setting up my networking down there

I'm considering using a Neet HDMI over Cat6 box to send my Sky+ channels to the kitchen TV, but naturally this means I have to watch the same programme in both rooms.

The TV has freesat built in. Is there a way of sending the signal from the aerial box in the living room across to the TV in the kitchen by Cat6 or some other method?
I'm assuming an aerial won't work in the cellar!

Also, does anyone have any good guides to terminating aerial cable?

Any suggestions welcome

Cheers, K

No

Only if you live very close to the transmitter

Terminating to what? If you want to stick a plug on the end of the cable try this

http://www.megalithia.com/elect/bellinglee/

Any suggestions welcome
Buy some more cable and connect the coax up to where you can access the aerial feed. And depending on the signal strength available you may be able to use a passive splitter (strong single area) or you may need a powered amplified one (weak signal area)

And if the TV does have Freesat (or did you mean Freeview?) that will require a direct connection to the dish. You can't split one of the feeds to the Sky box.

Thanks very much for the feedback
And yes, I did mean Freeview HD

If I extend the coax, which one of the cables would I choose to terminate? Or does it not matter?

May have to find a way of fishing the cable under the living room floorboards. Not ideal

Cheers

It only makes a difference if you terminate core A at the TV and extend core B in the cellar to the aerial Or B and A respectively.

So basically as long as you get the right core at each end of the cable between kitchen and cellar it makes no difference which you pick.

Depending on how the cables are run, if you have a CAT6 cable running from the living room to the cellar you might be able to use that as a pull wire. ie attach a bit of coax and another length of CAT 6 to one end of the existing CAT 6 and pull through to the other end.

Or attach two bits of string to the CAT 6 cable and pull both through to the other end. Detach one bit of string and tie it to something so you can't accidentally pull it back. Then use the bit of string still attached to the CAT 6 cable to pull that back through. Then use the other bit of string to pull the coax through.

That might work as long as the cable run is free of obstructions and the cable isn't run through holes in joists or walls that can't take the coax and CAT6 together.

This is great advice. many thanks Chris

I don't know what you paid for this work but from personal experience professionally installed kitchens cost more than most people on this forum can imagine. Have a chat to your builder as he has the necessary skills to put this right. If he is to blame he will do it for nothing because a good recommendation from a client is like gold dust. If it's your fault you can almost certainly come to an amicable arrangement. It's a new and probably expensive kitchen, don't bodge anything.

This is not that famous athlete is it? Hurdler supreme?

Imagine, Colin Jackson uses Digital Spy forums! Wowsers.

Why'd he change his name to Kris?

Buy some WF 100 cable to run from Sky box to cellar . Its really cheap and go to Satcure for it

Buy a distribution amp that allows Sky 9 volts to go through it http://www.aerialsat.com/prod/global...FamWtAodDjQAxQ something like that

You can then change channels in kitchen & use Freeview

For the cellar and Cat 6 cable, just buy an unmanned 1 Gb network switch and run that to the back of your Sky box
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-GS10...netgear+switch

You can also buy Cat 6 cable with the ends on it from Amazon and run with your tv cable under the floorboards to cellar . Here is 20 metre that I use http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ethernet-Net...cat+6+20+metre

Or buy a HDMI powered splitter, must be powered for sky to work ! I use a 1 IN & 2 OUT and run up to 25 metre HDMI cable and it works great

Hi Niall

sorry for the delayed response

thanks for the helpful suggestions

I dont quite understand how the WF100 from the sky box to the cellar will help - dont think there's an output on the back of the sky box?

The latest Sky boxes no longer have RF sockets, but do have a socket to connect an external adaptor for those who need them (but get the Triax one and not the much inferior Global one).
