I don't know if they are intelligent or not, not without seeing an IQ test, but they are without doubt ignorant. You can be highly intelligent but have not had access to knowledge and so are ignorant. I'm not sure what the housemates excuse is though.

I remember when people were embarrassed about their lack of knowledge. I often find myself saying please forgive me for my ignorance. But how has it got to a place where ignorance is celebrated?

Actually, BB got one wrong. What does kangaroo mean? They're supposed to say, "I don't know" to get it right but that's an urban myth. Nobody's 100% sure what kangaroo means but the closest they've got is,'large, black/grey edible thing'.”

At first I thought it meant 'jumping rabbit'..........but then remembered rabbits did not exist in Australia until we introduced them........duh.....

No it isn't, unless you think everyone called Dr is a medical doctor. I had no idea who he was until I googled the name - why should I?

You would go some way to beat BB13 Ashleigh claiming never to have heard of Hitler...

I don't really think you can compare the intelligence of BB contestants with the "young generation". There are many young people out there who have better things to do with their time than apply for BB, like go to work, college or university. If I was part of the "young generation" I would be quite offended by your post.

Yes, absolutely agree. As if BB housemates represented an entire generation! I can hardly believe that my own children and their friends, are members of the same species as most BB housemates, never mind generation, sometimes.

Where I work, everyone under about 30 has a degree as that is the minimum entry requirement these days. However, at least half of these well educated young people are breathtakingly ignorant when it comes to anything they haven't learnt in a classroom. Ask them about accountancy, economics etc and they're whizzes but I guarantee most of them couldn't name the leaders of the main political parties. One girl who works with me has a first but had never heard of Saddam Hussain or Bin Laden. Then, when we were laughing with a Jewish colleague who was tucking into a bacon sandwich, she had no idea what was funny and, when someone told her, she replied 'well I ain't religious so how would I know that?' and rolled her eyes at the very thought of knowing something that doesn't actively affect her life.
Yet most of these people could name the entire cast of TOWIE and spend their entire lives with the phones glued to their hands and discussing fake tan/botox/lip fillers etc.

What an ignorant and ridiculous generalisation this is. And worse, what an insult it is to the great majority of young people who study hard and do well in school despite people like you criticising them every step of the way. You obviously don't know many young people. the ones I see are bright, hard-working, community-minded and generous in spirit -- something from which you could learn.

The young of today are no more ignorant or less intelligent than we where at that age. It's just that we start to forget and become more judgmental the older we get.

I completely agree. Some of the comments and attitudes here towards young people here are very sad. I know many young people who work hard, are politically active, creative, intelligent, resourceful and genuinely interested in making this world better. Instead of having older people supporting them, encouraging them, acting as mentors and examples, we get the typical response here that 'they don't know shit', 'pig-ignorant bastards and proud', 'it's a f*cking shame' etc. If that's how the older generation articulate their opinions, I'll side with the young.

I was in a shop yesterday and the young man behind the counter said something along the lines of: "Are you alright or can I help you at all?"

The trouble was, it came out like: "Gargle gargle gargle".

Idiot.

So a young man with a job offered to help you and the best you can do is insult him and then go on a forum and call him an idiot? Wow. That says it all.
