When I recruit, I find it very difficult to find people with the necessary skills to write a decent business letter or e mail, for example. I don't have this problem when I recruit older women (older men rarely apply for service work) its the younger people that have this difficulty. They are the lion's share of applicants and few are fit for relatively simple and low skilled work.

To be fair many of them know more about how e mail works ( such as the hidden functionality) and can whizz around the net and social media in a way that leaves me breathlessly plodding behind. But when they get to where they are going they don't seem able to use the information or express themselves in writing. Its like a dog chasing a cat, when they catch them they don't know what to do with them.

Employers expect to teach people how to listen to customers, how to listen and how to analyse the problem, in the context of that specific operation. They don't expect to have to teach their staff to write a response in proper sentences or structured such that it can be understood by the customer or that reflects well on the professional image of the business. I think employers are also entitled to expect a general understanding of the world and a basic general knowledge from someone who has had 12 years of state education.

Meanwhile other countries are stealing a march on us. My worry is that we, our economy will fall behind. We also have an issue with youth unemployment. But within the general youth unemployment there is a core who just don't have satisfactory skills to do the jobs. It feels like that core is getting bigger. Yet as a society we seem to be at best enabling poor skills and at worst applauding them.

I can't help wondering, when I read some of the attitudes expressed on these boards, if part of the problem is that it has somehow become infra dig or prejudiced to notice poor literacy or poor thinking skills. As I said earlier it is frowned upon as if it were a racist or homophobic comment. But I don't feel it should be. People are the race or orientation they are. To me it is no different to being blue or brown eyed, left or right handed. But to chose ignorance and then demand to be judged equally overlooking this detail seems bizarre.”

Until my mobility packed up I had this stereotypical image of "teenagers", But two years ago I employed a 15 and 14 year old to walk my dog after school and weekends.
They've been a revelation. Not only is one academically excellent (she's already putting money aside for University) and studies hard, but the other one who will be lucky to clock up more than 3 GCSE's has common sense in abundance and I'd trust her with anything.
They've really changed my opinion of that age group. We have "strops" which I find hilarious, but they're never rude, they know what's going on in the world, think the idiots on TOWIE etc (I don't think they're allowed to watch BB) are pig ignorant and although there's a healthy amount of crushes (I know far more about Little Mix and 1Direction than I ever did before

) are just normal.

Do I take my two as the only way all their age group behaves? Of course not. It's so lazy and easy to dismiss swathes of people as the norm. Any idiot who goes on BB these days signs up to be as moronic and idiotic as possible.

Which, hypocritically is why I get so much fun out of them making prats out of themselves.

Someone in work, with a very good degree, had no idea who Nelson Mandela was when he died. She claimed to think he was just a statue, not a real person

Mind you, I remember my first ever job working for a little local company and the bosses wife was a real old school fur coat and no knickers type. They had a villa in Portugal and she came in to tell me about the place. According to her, it was in Algravy which is, apparently, a lovely little island.

And then there was the couple in mainland Greece who asked the barman to order them a taxi to get to Corfu as they didn't fancy going by boat

Yes, it is quite obvious it's Johnny and I got it straight away, but if you read it quickly and are not concentrating I think most people would say June.

It is a trick question if you are flummoxed or nervous. Reading it slowly though makes it very obvious.

I totally agree with you, but then don't you think it comes down to youngsters using computers from a very young age with spell checks on and them not learning their basics in English and Maths from a young age like we all did?

Some people are not good spellers but can be very intelligent and verbally knowledgeable. My husband and son are these type of people, a mass of knowledge and brightness and my son can hold his own in any conversation and talk the hind legs off a donkey but will never be a great speller. This is why I would not make a point of correcting people on here with their spelling because I know that some people cannot help it and it would only embarrass them and make it stand out more. I think that some people that pick people up all the time on here with their spelling come over as being very condescending at times.

Yet myself and two of my other sons can spell and write perfectly but are not as vocal, my eldest brother is the same but very intelligent. So in life it can take all types of people to get on in life. The majority of us have our good and bad points, none of us are perfect!

But I do agree with you that it is very worrying for our younger generation, I do think that they need to go back to basics and not rely on the computer so much. Maybe they will then learn to read, write and at least moderately spell!
