In our house we've been discussing how perhaps some people accept what they're told mindlessly without any examination of the facts or critical thinking - and then do what they're told.
We were (very heavy handedly) told that Pav is a snake in the grass and can't be trusted. Then this was reinforced with repetition.
Who needs evidence? People said it, it must be true.
I associate it with tabloid reader mentality. "They couldn't say it if it wasn't true" etc.
Plus, some folk always have their flaming torches and pitchforks close at hand, and are just looking for a chance to use them.
