Sony's latest firmware (pkg2193) for my TV (SONY KDL-42w829B) lists
Benefits and improvements as:

◾Adds the Twin Tuner function, which allows you to watch and record two channels at the same time where your service operator permits it. - Want to know more? Check our Twin Tuner Frequently Asked Questions
Support page:
http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/con...-42w829B#about

I've checked and while the TV is running this version of the firmware it still displays a 'feature not available while recording' message when I try to watch another channel while recording. (This is via Freeview)

I've tried a factory reset and was just wondering if any of you kind folk might offer some advice?

I have a ticket open with Sony support.. But my first conversation with them hasn't really instilled much confidence.

Thanks in advance!

After loading pkg2193 and rebooting I had to power down totally as the TV had lost the ability to pause or record anything. The ability to play old recordings was fine.

I am now back to the same position as you with a 1 tuner recorder.

Why didn't your conversation with Sony support instill confidence?

I called Sony support Friday morning. After going through some rudimentary 'off and on again' level support, they told me they'd logged a ticket and I should expect a response next Tuesday?? They didn't seem particularly knowledgeable.. Reassured to know I'm not the only one with this problem. Really hope the dual tuner is enabled. Its only that and the inability to go frame by frame through recorded files that I was disappointed with.. We record a lot of cbeebies!! Their schedule is a mess. Trying to spool through to the start of Sarah and Duck, is almost impossible...

*update* 29/07/14 Just got off the phone with Sony 'Support' They confirmed they would only be enabling dual tuner functionality on 4k tv's???
Perhaps they should consider updating their support page notes.......

Dreadful.

Many thanks for doing the leg work to find out what the situation really is.
Even without Accurate Recording to take account of early starts or late finishes, or be able to record freeview radio, it would have been a good feature to be able to record even 1 channel while watching a different channel.

I've not tried the recording feature on my 42W829 yet as I have too many PVRs already, but it is very interesting to hear that some models, at least, have twin tuners. I would guess that some models only have a single tuner on board, hence why it can't always be enabled.

That said, has anyone tried watching BBC1 whilst recording BBC2, for example (i.e. channels on same MUX)? You only need one tuner for that case. Just wondering if that is what Sony mean by "where your service operator permits it"??? Seems a little cryptic to me.

Yes and it doesn't make any difference.

When I bought my TV it had 1 or 2 tuners depending on which version of the spec/advertising I looked at.

Yes, I've since tried this out - can't say I was too impressed and prefer my PVR which is quicker and easier to navigate. I notice Sony have now updated their webpage to clarify that this function is indeed only available to 4K models. It's a shame that they won't allow 2 channels to be recorded off the same MUX, which wouldn't require two tuners.

The recorder function is now worse on my TV since installing v2.294. It now no longer can track the programme title on recordings where padding has been added.

Does anyone know how I can go back to PKG2.291EUA? Or even as early as PKG2.086EUA?

By the way the release note for v2.294 was:
Benefits and improvements:
◾Enhances picture quality when watching fast motion scenes in 3D
◾Improves the performance of 4K playback by USB
Improves usability of USB HDD recorded title management
