"What is love?" Can anyone explain this? I don't think I have ever felt it and I have had multiple long term relationships, Even though I said "love you" now I think about it I'm unsure if it was really love, I'm a horrible person so what is it? how can you tell if its hit you?

One theory on love is that it has three components; intimacy, passion and commitment. If you have high levels of all three, you are experiencing consummate love, which is the ideal that most people would like to have with their partner.

It is a very good question.

When I was growing up I was told when you meet the right person you will just know. I didn't really understand what that meant. I did this and that until in my mid twenties I met someone and POW. "You will just know" made perfect sense. Unfortunately what the wise words had failed to mention is that it isn't necessarily mutual and 4 years later it turned out that he didn't feel the way I did.

So where does that leave the theory. Dead in the water I think. I never had another POW moment. Maybe because I lost faith in POW.

I have however had plenty of melting moments but I no longer believe in the romantic, together forever sort of love that we are supposed to look for and settle down with.

I do believe in love but I honestly now believe that the unconditional love we are supposed to seek only exists between parent and child (and vice versa) and sometimes between siblings. But for every other relationship I think it is always conditional.

That's just my experience. Some may find it sad that I no longer believe in romantic love. But its not a biggy. I have found that there are lots of ways of having satisfying and fulfilling relationships. Some may be long, some may be short, some may be consecutive and this will horrify the forum but some have been concurrent. . I feel that having let go of the search for the ideal special love has liberated me, to enjoy more and experience .more and to be more contended than many of my married friends and also the single ones who are forever on the quest.

Really, I am quite surprised as you have had a number of relationships. What about the butterfly feeling when you see that person and the longing and missing of somebody in separation? There are so many little sides of love.

You know it's love when you find someone so enchanting that you just can't get enough of them and want to spend more and more time in their company and they occupy the majority of your thoughts which usually brings a secret smile to your face.
I knew I was in love because I actually developed a new permanent line on my face next to my mouth from smiling so much. We've been together since 1997.

Love is sacrifice,.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends"

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” —I Corinthians 13:4-8a

"If you love someone, set them free."

Possessiveness, selfishness and control are the complete opposite of love.

"What is love?"

A good question, and this is just the place to get a range of sterling answers. Hopefully one or two will suit your frame of mind.

When I met my now partner the best way of describing it is as a feeling that 'I'd come home'. Like that song, Songbird' 'I feel like when I'm with you it's alright'. I felt like I was totally me, I felt so content and at peace with myself and that he was the person I'd been meant to meet all my life.

Love is a beautiful thing And even if it ends tomorrow, it's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

Actually one of my favourite quotes about love is from Vanessa Paradis after she'd split from Johnny Depp. She said 'love is the strongest and most fragile thing in the world'. Poignant and true.

Love is -

still fighting like cat & dog sometimes
laughing together at loads of stuff
boring the pants off each other sometimes but putting up with it
still looking forward to things together
(getting through LOTS of hard times)

and many more - after 48 years of marriage (and they said it wouldn't last)

(roll on 2016!!!)

You should listen to it An Throp, it's one of those songs that practically destroys me beside it's really beautiful lol! It's originally a Fleetwood Mac song and Eva Cassidy sang a beautiful cover of it.

It's a connection you have with someone. It's visual, chemical and mental. It can be instant or it can grow over time. How you nurture it when you have it is what counts. You won't always both be on the same page, but one of you will be willing to keep it going when things get tough. As you age and grow 'together' the pay off is a love more profound and passionate than anything you felt in the beginning.

Dedicated to my husband of 27 years.
