Could anyone give me advice about this? I have a rather old Nokia N95 8GB phone, I know it's a bit old fashioned but I like it, I am on TMobile PAYG as I only use it for calls and texts, however I was going to get a sim only contract as my credit doesn't last long now. as texts are 14p. Is it worth taking out a contract on a phone like mine, what would I get in internet access, can anyone tell me? What I really wanted to know would I be able to download Easyjet or Ryanair boarding passes on to that type of phone, as I travel a lot, but not sure if that phone would be suitable? Any advice would be appreciated

To be able to download and add boarding passes on to your phone, there needs to be an 'app' for that airline. As far as I'm aware, the majority of airlines only develop apps for Android or iOS, which means you'd need a phone with one of those operating systems.

Your N95 is, in the mobile world, a really old phone. The operating system it runs isn't being developed any more, and the people who make apps won't support it.

If you just want to be able to access the internet and stuff on your phone, then the N95 is fine, it can do both of those things and you could get a SIM only contract with minutes, texts and a bit of data for about £10-15 per month. You only need a plan with 3G support on that phone, you don't need 4G as the phone doesn't have the right internal bits to work with it.

Thanks for that info, it's been most helpful. Guess I will have to get a more up to date phone, but I just love my old Nokia!

you could get a new android or second hand one for 50-100 depending on what spec phone you want/need, you dont have to spend hundreds if its only for texts/calls/ one or two apps etc.

Most flight operators will have a way to send you a boarding pass if an app isn't developed for your phone of choice. Usually it is a link to a private url with your boarding card details. Basically the same as the app only done via the web.

Secondly the operating system you handset is based on is still developed for, Symbian became the OS of choice for Nokia feature phones like the Asha series.

Rather than go the contract route I suggest you try Three's 321 pay as you go tariff. Everytime you top up it comes with 150mb of free data in addition to your credit.

1p per mb
2 per txt
3per min calls

More info here:

http://www.three.co.uk/Store/SIM/Pay_As_You_Go

Its great tariff if you don't use your phone all that much. Try that first see how you go and if it doesn't work out then go sim only.

MS (who bought Nokia's phone division) announced this month that Asha was to be discontinued:

Asha runs on S40 but most people think that is Symbian Series 40.

But you're right that Symbian Series 60 was fully deprecated after the Nokia Pureview 808

You could get a tesco aim only. They're capped no no chance of accidentally going over your allowance and getting a shock bill.

For £10 a month I get 1000mins. 5000sms and 1gb of data.

If you want a more up to date phone there's the Moto g for £12.50 a month. Or if you fancy sticking with Nokia various lumina handsets.

Ahh the N95 8GB. Still my all time favourite phone! Only phone I've owned since to come close is my current Lumia 1020.

Symbian series 40? Do people honestly think that?

Series 60 was a user interface that ran on top of Symbian
(As did Series 80 and 90). Series 40 was a user interface that ran on top of NOS. For Pureview Nokia Belle ran on top of Symbian.

Asha was originally based on Series 40, the latest handsets use a development of the Smarterphone platform.

Although if you're willing to go on a cheap contract, you could probably get a cheap Windows Phone or a Moto G for about 10 quid a month and you'll get a much more capable phone than the old Nokia ever will be.

Yes, you are probably right about a cheap phone being more capable, but it just won't feel or look as good as the Nokia N95. Daft, I know ,but that's my opinion , anyway

Sometimes I'm tempted to "go retro" - probably the N86 though (for the camera - the only mobile with variable aperture).

Closest that I've had to the N95 is my 808. After my 1020 decided to temporarily stop working (camera overheated - reboot resolved it) I went back to the 808 for a day. After 6 months with the 1020 and 18 months with an iPhone 4S the 808 felt like a breath of fresh air. I'd forgotten how much better the camera is (the 1020 is pretty poor in comparison) and it really did feel way quicker than the 1020 - at least for still imaging.

But back to the OP, I'd expect that most airlines and operators have mobile web sites that work almost as good as an "app". In which case I'd suggest getting a SIM only deal with some data plan, then installing Opera Mobile (iirc its downloaded/installed from m.opera.com).

I didn't realise MS had taken that decision. I suppose it will leave Nokia space to re-enter the market on their own terms.

My apologies I had thought it been implemented on feature phones. I understand its only being "maintained by Accenture" now.
