Help please with a Toshiba 32KV500B tv. The screen lights up and the top two thirds, approx, are fine but the bottom has the top of the original picture in different colours superimposed over the main picture. Without a signal after a minute the bottom looks a bit like a large bar code in various colours.
I know that the tv is a Vestel with a Toshiba badge so it is not worth spending a lot to repair it but I can use a soldering iron if it is something fairly straightforward.
The tv has had three to four months normal use in the last two and a half years as it was in a holiday home which was a bit damp in winter time. The previous owner has let me have it to play with and it seems a shame to dump it.

One of the easier common faults that can be user fixed is the dodgy capacitor problem. Not unheard of for manufacturers to use poor quality electrolytic capacitors in the power supply that go faulty (indicated by bulging tops and possibly leaking contents). These are not that difficult to swap out if you can get at the circuit board to do so. The capacitors themselves are not that expensive either.

However this fault may be rather more serious, though power supply problems can give rise to all sorts of odd effects so can't be entirely ruled out.

But if it is not a dodgy power supply tracking down what is actually causing the fault might be the easy bit. Finding replacement parts could be a bit harder.

OK Chrisjr, I will take off the back next week and check out the power supply. I hope that it may be only cooked caps as I have changed quite a few over the years. If not, any idea what I could be looking for? I have a faulty Techwood (also made by Vestel) which has no picture at all which I could maybe rob some parts from.

The fault description sounds more like a duff screen than anything else?, could be the T-Con board (which is part of the screen, but sometimes available separately).

Thanks Nigel. If this is the problem, do you think that it could have been caused by the damp winter conditions and would it be worth fixing? It looks like a Vestel to me.

Most Toshiba's are just cheap Vestel's, if it is the screen then it's not worth fixing, even the T-Con board (if available at all) tends to make it not worthwhile.

Thanks again Nigel. If I get a few spare minutes next week I will check the Toshiba and the Techwood to see if I can make a good one out of the two, if not both to the bin.
Thanks to Chrisjr and Nigel for taking the time to help me. Have a good weekend both of you.

One thing to look for. Check the circuit board to see if there are any part numbers printed on them. If they are both Vestel it is possible they share parts. Depends on whether they are of similar age and how much, if any, customisation they have.

If the part numbers do turn out to be the same then you stand a fighting chance of being able to swap them round. However if they are very different there could be all sorts of changes to the design that renders them incompatible.
