Alison Steadman would be amazing and has worked with Roger Sloman AKA les Coker before in Mike Leighs excellent "Nuts In May"

Alison Steadman would be a perfect choice to play Sylvie. She slightly resembles Shirley and she's also a wonderful actress. She would be just right for the show. Hopefully the casting team and others can persuade her to join the soap.

I think Alison would be great on EE but not sure about this role, it would be odd seeing her play such an unikeable (I'm assuming this) character! Also to me she doesn't look old enough to play Shirley's mum, I was shocked to see she was 69, she only looks early 60's. Even still she seems a lot younger than Stan, who is played by a 79 year old although I'm not sure how old Stan is supposed to be. I think Alison would be better suited as Linda's mum.

Alison would be great for EE but not as Sylvie. I see Alison as Elaine not Sylvie.
How old is Babe? Annette Badland is 64 so I am guessing Sylvie is older than Babe? I think any actress will have to be in their seventies and I think EE will pull out the stops and bring in a big name as Sylvie. |

I see this character like Maris in Frasier- the unseen monster... |

She's too young as Shirley in her 50's as Sylvie needs to be at least 20 yrs older.

What about prunella scales? Whereas sylvie was horrible in the past, she has aged into this lovely sweet lady... Babe seems to be protective of her?

Ahh yeah Anne Reid might be good. Alison Steadman should be Linda's mum.

Alison Steadman can do unlikeable - you only need to watch Abigail's Party to see that.

Sylvie could have been a young bride - she could have married at 16 and had Shirley quickly - a lot of women still did in the 1950s. They might even have 'had' to get married. Just because Stan is 70s doesn't Sylvie has to be - she could be as young as 68 and still legally be Shirley's mother so Steadman is still possible from that aspect.

Alison Steadman should have been Glenda.
I wouldn't want her as Sylvia. She would look too young plus if she ever did decide to join EastEnders they should build a family around her. Not vice versa. |

Of that list Anne Reid and Alison steadman would be the best. No disrespect to the other very fine actresses mentioned there but they just don't feel 'right' for the show or what we've been told about Sylvie so far.
Somebody on another thread had a good suggestion of Georgia Hale who was Budgie's ex wife for those people with very long memories (Adam Faith series from the early 70s) and more recently was Texas and India's Grandmother in Hollyoaks a couple of years ago. |

Georgia Hale was great in Hollyoaks although it was slightly hilarious seeing her play the on-screen mother of an actor older than her
I love Hale, have done ever since I saw Budgie repeated in the early 80s. |

I cannot picture her as the wife of Stan though.
I can see steadman and West as a couple, especially when younger. I actually think Sylvie being 10 years younger than Stan and looking good on it ( a young 68) as opposed to a man in his late 70s that looks right for his age could work quite well and be an interesting dynamic. It might also explan why she left, if she was only early 30s and just coming into herself and not wanting to be tied down by a middle aged drunken husband and 3 'kids'. |

Sorry, that's actually Georgina Hale - my auto correct shortened it for some reason!

Although I do have an image of what sylvie would be like, she is to a certain extent a blank slate as she could have changed so much in 35 years so they can make her whatever they want her to be now.

Anne Reid is a good shout, she is extremely versatile. I think those suggestions are a bit lazy,, they have just picked seven popular actresses rather than researching those that are good for the part. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be someone none of us have ever heard of

I find her to fluffy to be Shirley's mum personally, although I would love to have her in the show under any capacity.

But then the first thing I ever saw her in was 'Abigail's Party' in which she is, on the surface, the perfect, gracious hostess but actually quite a nasty piece of work so I tend to find it odder when she plays genuinely nice people! My only concern about steadman is that she'd want to keep doing these short dramas and stage work which would mean lengthy and frequent absenses which is something I really don't like in the show. |

Anne Reid is more suited to Northern roles.
Dame Eileen Atkins would be great or Jean Marsh. |

I agree - it is like they just selected anybody popular that is over the age of 60 and some of them are only just like Victoria Wood who, whilst I haven't checked can't be that old given when she one 'New faces' or 'opportunity Knocks' - wood and Walters was about 1980 and I'm sure they were only mid 20s.

Lol I have not seen Abigail's Party but we did get to see her being a bit bitchy in Gavin and Stacey and she was really good in the syndicate too and that character wasn't too fluffy so I can see what you mean on reflection. I think that's the problem with some of these bigger names, they like the variety too much to commit themselves fully. I still wish Lynda Baron had stayed on. |

I love Anne Reid I think she would be perfect for it , although not sure why it has to someone high profile , be funny if they got Helen Fraser so she can be reunited with Yvonne Atkins playing her mother
