"1080 SD" on Netflix?
Satellite John
03-08-2014
I watch Netflix on my WD TV Live player, and on pressing Options it displays the resolution that Netflix is displaying. However, for most titles it is showing "1080 SD"? Is this an error? How can 1080 be SD?
Thanks for any help.

That's more than likely the output of the WDTV rather than the content.
I'd of thought that when you set up the WDTV you set the resolution to 1080?

Same here, Netflix through my Sony Blu Ray player - 1080 SD?
Always used to show 1080 HD (when HD was available), strange, and I haven't changed any settings.

Yep my WDTV Live SMP is doing the same ramps up from 720 P to 1080 SD.

Yes, I noticed this recently on my WDTV Live. It has to just be an error and it is still actually displaying "Super HD", right? As far as I know it'd be impossible to output 1080 "standard definition"?!

I did not think the WD Live Netflix app was capable of Super HD? Only standard 1080p HD?

I'm not sure. In the menus it lists titles as being Super HD but, when you press the options button during playback, it does not display "Super HD". As discussed it says 1080SD, so I'm not sure that can be relied upon at all.

I seem to remember it used to say Super HD during playback, before the last update. I could be wrong though.

After a quick Google I couldn't find any definitive answers but the general consensus seemed to be that any device capable of 1080p would be capable of Super HD. Not sure if it is simply an increased bitrate rather than a different codec, for example?

Its perfectly possible as there isn't the same locked down standards when it comes it defining HD and SD in streaming. It can be streaming in a a 1080p container but only be pulling a bit rate that they consider to be SD. I believe Netflix deem it HD only when it hits a 3k bit rate (the max a 720p rated streaming device can achieve)
