I'm surprised that New Tricks rating didn't generate more comments to be honest. I remember logging on at work this morning and literally pulled this face
when I saw that 5.8m rating. But from what your saying is we shouldn't have discussed it and waited on the next few weeks to identify a trend and draw a conclusion - which is quite frankly ridiculous when the NT rating is probably one of the most shocking ratings of the entire year.

I have been discussing it but we do not know what the rating means in context until we see the timeshifts and next weeks rating is all I am saying. So too early for all the terminal decline posts etc.

The TV audience at 9pm yesterday was over 23m which doesn't seem awful for the time of year.
The pre XF shows did 3.3m as did the shows that followed and indeed the 2011 series probably gave XF the best lead-ins it has had since Saturday Night Takeaway ran in the autumn.
Red or Black was itself a failure, as expectations were a lot higher, but XF 2012 had its own problems which were nothing to do with its lead ins or outs. Itv haven't done anything decent in years in those slots. ROB was a rare flicker of ambition which didn't pay off in the end.
Well yes, if you remove two of the biggest hit formats in the world then the success rate is terrible... but it doesn't seem like a terribly sensible way to evaluate things!
Out of interest, who should itv be commissioning from?
Given that I can't see Celebrity Chase or Jonathan Ross doing much more than 3.3m, I don't imagine this is the case. Especially as CC will have less audience crossover with XF than Red or Black.
It's more cost effective by a mile though!

It's very well showing a promo a lot but doesn't count for much if nobody is around to watch it. It might have been smart to buy some time on Channel 4 and E4 to widen the reach, particularly among the younger audiences. It wouldn't surprise me if the 16-34 weekly reach of itv is below 50% at the moment.”

Iv just skipped through the days posts and it felt like New Tricks was ever present as a discussion point.
At the end of the day (about now ) every show has a shelf life and New Tricks been a spectacular success over a much longer period than may have been expected when it launched. Getting high ratings in July/August is no easy task and NT has produced many over the years to the extent that 5.8 million now seems a failure. A victim of its own success in that respect.
Personally Iv watched a fair few episodes but Iv never been quite able to grasp why its hooked quite so many loyal viewers in-and I always thought there was room for more comedy between the cast than we actually got. Some episodes were rather bland imo.

A different era, though, surely, we can't make relevant comparisons from 1975 or 1969 (when Python started). It was another world entirely, people were still happy to watch The Black and White Minstrel Show. As I said, Harry Hill knows exactly what can work in primetime because he was on primetime ITV1 successfully for a decade. Nobody was worried about "his surreal comedy" then, so why should they be now? You may as well argue that if ITV signed Miranda Hart it would be a flop if she just did her character from Hyperdrive.
I wasn't slagging off Carrott's Commercial Breakdown, because I used to like it when Jasper Carrott did it. I was slagging off the umpteen other series of Commercial Breakdown Jasper Carrott didn't do to illustrate that its success was down to the host and not just to the bog standard format. Same with Harry Hill's TV Burp.

Not since they confirmed 2 series before they started making this one, so there will be another series after this one.
Hopes of a ratings rise next week might be disapponted by BBC2 showing the 2nd Scotland Indepenece debate at 8.30-10.00pm next monday, bound to attract quite a view viewers including possibly most of NT's scottish viewers.
They must be getting short on names for "Strictly Come Dancing" but it never seems to affect the ratings. I thought one of the best had a few really good names in it, but people still watch including myself regardless. I like the sound of Chris Hoy joining, I don't really like when you don't know the contestants, but I'd never have chosen Hammond. Could they not have got a soap star instead of her, there's tons out of work surely or a comedian.

#CelebrityBigBrother continued with a strong 1.75m/11.0% at 10pm, putting Channel 5 second behind BBC1 during the hour.

I do think that "New Tricks" is in trouble. Its in its 11th series, and survived that drama axe because of its mammoth ratings. The episode was really long and poorly written. I get the feeling Ben Stevenson from Drama probably doesnt particularly want it and if it falls they will be quick to get rid of it. However its not hugely expensive either is it? Had they been in period costume perhaps it would be less easy to continue. It has been a great success but I think down to cast chemistry.

It is missing the Alun Armstrong character. He provided the heart of the show together with comedy. Nicholas Lyndhurst character is boring in comparison. Has to be writing as Nicholas Lyndhust is capable of more. Tamsin has fitted in well.

Strictly still needs some big names. Last year the ratings didn't shoot up like they did in previous series. Thought last year's line up was lacklustre.

Another example perhaps of one of my pet theories - series which are renewed for more than one season very often then drop sharply in the ratings from the start of the following season and are cancelled at the end of the second season.
This used to be mainly a phenemenon in the US (Glee, 24, Lois & Clark, Heroes) but perhaps is happening now in the UK (Waterloo Road, and maybe New Tricks).

I reckon this year we will get around the same calibre. It concerns me they have picked Hammond!!
Greg Wallace as well not very inspired, apparently he has been selected for this year.
Good ratings there for "In The Club" growing it's audience after a difficult start. And "Celebrity Big Brother" second place in the 10pm figures. Again a good cast really boosts these shows and I reckon Kellie Maloney probably boosting its popularity at the moment.
