I am disappointed that Tumble didn't perform better. It certainly had flaws but it certainly has potential too. I would have liked to see more variety rather than just hoop and floor but that asides, with some improvements, it could be a good show, and I don't blame the BBC for trying to do it. The problem with LE shows nowadays is that they're either ill-timed or poorly executed. Tumble wasn't poorly executed but could have been a little bit more variable with regards to the routines. Stepping Out on ITV last Autumn, could have worked had it been shown two months earlier. It was ill-timed, putting it against a massive already established dance show was crazy. That is the problem with broadcasters these days. Shows are created to either "kill off" another one that's similar on a rival channel, or they're continuing themes based around a singular formula.
It's all well and good rubbing hands with glee when a show fails on a channel you have less bias towards, but overall it means quality TV will become less and less because broadcasters won't eventually invest in them.
On the other hand, let's not look at ITV's figures at all shall we? OK, Tumble got over 3m viewers. Ordinarily that's not good. But it got a 20% audience share which means there were far, far fewer people watching TV. But, Tumble still got twice as many viewers than ITV got. So, what does this tell us? Has TV actually become so bad during the spring and summer that people do genuinely believe it is crap? I can't ever remember a time when television across the board has been less appealing. The very fact that the country's most watched television programme during the last 7 days was a programme about making cakes just about sums it all up.
So, in conclusion, was Tumble a flop? Yes, and No. If the TV audience was at full capacity, the figure of 3.16m would be abysmal. The share would be around 14%. But considering 20% of viewers who were watching telly last night at 6.30 decided to watch Tumble suggests it certainly has the potential to be a middling hit and deserving of a recommission.”
I knew you'd pick up on my post, its the sort of post Robbie (among others) would use often with gleefulness at an ITV flop. However over the past few weeks we have been told time and time again that this will be 'the biggest new entertainment hit' this year. Promotion by Samuel as if its the best thing since sliced bread - when it isn't, its just Splash only with Gymnastics. I wouldn't be so 'thrilled' as you put it if we didn't have this bigged up as some sort of quality TV show.
You say I seem to take comments personally about ITV, but aren't you doing exactly what your telling me not to do?
Tumble is not quality TV. Strictly is, DA is, CTM is, SNT is - Tumble isn't. It does perhaps have a bit of potential but not enough to sustain more than 1 or 2 series. Just because Tumble flopped doesn't mean quality TV is lost. The BBC axed The Crimson Field remember even though is rated over 6m. They can't commission Tumble, then axed quality drama like that.
ITV haven't even bothered for the last few weeks, is it any wonder they didn't rate well. I'm not surprised they rated poorly - and they deserved too.
Tumble is just not longed for this world.
