Tonight is ITV's best schedule in weeks.

I wonder how The Village will do tonight. I don't think it will be above 4m. And despite ITV's stronger schedule I don't think anything will be above 3.5m on ITV.

Predictions

AR 4.1m
Countryfile 5m
The Village 3.8m

The Game Show Story 2.8m
The Zoo 3.4m
The Great War 3.1m

Years ending with 3 and 4 are bad for the BBC then

Birt came to the BBC from LWT in 1987 when he was appointed deputy DG.His first responsibility was for current affairs following his experience at LWT when he presided over Weekend World, possibly the most boring programme ever invented where a presenter spoke to camera for the best part of an hour, Birt believing that graphics and visuals got in the way (we are talking about television here). He became DG in 1992 and left in 2000, subsequently to become an adviser to Tony Blair.

The Great War documentary is certainly a quality production made with Imperial war museum, deserves a good audience, but guess around 3 million.

so the new Ant and Dec then?

Tumbles ratings are hardly great, but lets be honest is a poor format to start with, just another in a long line, of celebs doing something vaguely sporting or dance related, in a bid for viewers, people are right to say it would have been slagged off far more if it was on ITV.

Still its the middle of a very hot summer, and the BBC had to put something on.

Dancc thank you for the Under the Dome news.

Yes its incredibly poignant not least because the letters are just so heartfelt and with a kind of innocence that I don't think exists today. And yet written amidst a terrifying hell.

The Village was as miserable, or to (mis)use a thread favourite "depressing", as the weather outside and I bloody loved it, even better than last series. Hope it does well but sadly I can't see it getting over 4m either.

It wasn't as miserable as it was last series. I enjoyed it too! Am going to watch the World war doc now. I recorded it.

The Village will win the 9pm ratings easy. Much better lead-in and a well established returning drama with high quality BBC Drama values which audiences expect. The WW1 doc on Itv will rate low, if the recent BBC2 World war doc ratings are anything to go by. 2-3million is my guess, could well be on the lower end of that range.

Well, the WWI doc on ITV is superb. Very accessible to a wide audience. I wouldn't be sure about The Village beating it. The Village wasn't exactly a smash hit last year was it?

Agreed. I wasn't being completely serious, just getting in before those who call everything that isn't a laugh a minute "depressing" do. It actually had a much lighter tone than last series, while still having a few poignant moments. I really hope people give it another try this series as I would love for it to last for the planned 42 episodes.

Ended with 4.13m in the overnights last May, going by how Mr Selfridge's second series went it could be an ugly figure in the morning.

That said I did find the last series good so I have recorded tonights ep to watch later.

This documentary is totally and utterly ruined by excessive ad breaks. Why can't ITV use better judgement on where and when to place ads. I am fed up of FF every 11 minutes! It ruins the poignancy.

Late to the party but that Tumble rating is beautiful. And to think more people than normal here thought it could be on a Strictly level.

When ITV announced this, the BBC announced a similar documentary as well. It's called Great War Diaries and goes out on BBC2 on Saturdays.

“Great War Diaries

BBC Two

August

BBC Two’s Great War Diaries brings together 25 broadcasters from around the world to produce television’s global event for the centennial of World War One. Ten years in the making, this is a truly international co-production.

The series tells the story of 1914-18 solely through the eyes of those who lived through it. Inspired by letters and journals, many of which have never been published before, it follows the individual stories of twelve characters whose writings are woven into one compelling narrative. From a young Cossack girl who follows her father into battle, a French schoolboy who witnesses his country under occupation, a traumatised Italian American who ends up in a mental asylum, to a well-to-do young lady who volunteers for work in a munitions factory, their writings focus on what archive and historical analysis cannot reveal: personal tragedy, love, happiness, pain and grief.

Through glorious dramatic reconstruction viewers experience the greatest war mankind had ever seen; not from the perspective of what it was, but of what it was like from within. Great War Diaries reveals the simple human experience of 1914-18, unsullied by historical interpretation.

Just because they have 3 new shows does not make a great schedule though. I agree though that 3 new shows on ITV on any day is something these days. The War doc was good.

I schedule without a rpt - I'd say with recent days on ITV of rpt central, that is a much improved schedule.

Admittedly the game show doc is filler, but nostalgic filler, the factual about London Zoo in its fourth series (could do well on Sunday - although up against CF) and the war doc drama/factual mixture was superb.

ITV have done very little on the commemoration while the BBC have done a huge tranche of programmes across radio and TV not to mention the live events (which of course is part of the role of the national broadcaster). I didn't see the ITV programme tonight so can't comment but in principle I would expect little or no advertising bearing in mind the subject matter.

Oh here we go. ITV had the doc last weekend and 4 hour long episodes of The Great War: The People's Story. On ITV News they have been featuring WW1 for a couple of weeks.

ITV isn't the only commercial broadcaster. They do despite the subject matter have to make money.

Interesting that the following article is on the first page of the BBC's website:-

Quote:
“Mixed reviews for BBC One gymnastics show Tumble

Tumble, BBC One's new gymnastics-themed talent show, has received mixed reviews following its Saturday night launch.

According to one critic, the show, in which 10 celebrities seek to impress a judging panel with gymnastic and aerial routines, "lacked distinctiveness".

Yet the Telegraph's Gerard O'Donovan nonetheless predicted it would "grow in strength and confidence as it goes on".

The Daily Mail's critic, however, was unimpressed, saying it proved reality television had "hit a new low".

Tumble, wrote Jim Shelley, "treated the viewers as if they were either young kids or just idiots".

He went on to call the programme "criminally unimaginative", "unintentionally amusing" and full of "tired" cliches.

"The main thing that is going to be taking a 'Tumble' is the ratings," he concluded.

Ex-Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding, former Dynasty actress Emma Samms and one-time Blue Peter presenter Peter Duncan are among the familiar faces taking part in the contest.

Sugababes member Amelle Berrabah and former EastEnders actor John Partridge are also competing alongside Loose Women's Andrea McLean and boxer Carl Froch.

Exercise instructor Mr Motivator, real name Derrick Evans, had to pull out last month after dislocating his knee in rehearsals.

The celebrities' efforts are assessed by judges that include Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci, Strictly Come Dancing champion Louis Smith and gymnast turned broadcaster Craig Heap.

The Mirror's Mark Jefferies found their contributions "a little stiff", suggesting Smith "seemed to be lost for words - or realistic sentences".

"The judges could be sharper, perhaps a bit spikier and have fun with it," he continued. "They need to remember this is not a proper gymnastics competition for a world title but a bit of fun on the telly."

Overall, though, he said the show would succeed "if everyone just loosens up a bit" and it was "given a few weeks to settle in".

Tumble's launch on BBC One drew an average audience of 3.2 million, according to overnight figures - a million less than tuned in later that evening for a repeat of Mrs Brown's Boys.”
